· Listen to David talking about part of a trip through the Amazon region. Then answer the following questions.

1) What were David’s two hosts doing in Brazil? Why did they invite David to their encampment?

2) “I suddenly realized this was it”. What was that?

3) “One of the most wonderful experiences I’ve ever had”. Why was it so wonderful?

4) What did David have for breakfast? How did he feel about it?

5) What was being mined? What was the method? How did David feel about it?

6) How did David feel when the Indians turned up one morning? What made him feel that way?

6) Why did he follow the man, at the pool?

7) What was the job of the men on the fishing expedition?

· Discuss the following questions in groups.

1) Where had David been talking about just before the extract begins?

2) What part of the anecdote gives you the strongest feeling of what is felt like to be in Amazonas?

3) What was the attitude of the Indians to David? How did they communicate?

4) David twice uses the “fronted” expression “Little did I realize…” Why does he use it each time?

5) With what emotions does David seem to look back on his experience now?

6) On two occasions David seems to feel he was, or looked, a bit silly. Which ones?

 

5. Describe the Indians’ method of fishing, using four or five sentences.
