A Shanghai Photographer’s Favourite Spots

Based in Shanghai since 2005 and a regular press-contributor, internationally published French-Polish photographer Tim Franco (www.timfranco.com) captures the huge changes afoot in China through a mix of urban landscape and documentary portraits. He gives us the lowdown on where to go for Shanghai’s best photographs.

Suzhou River (Suzhou Creek; Click here) The entire waterway from Waibaidu Bridge to M50 is fascinating, with a rich assortment of landscapes from old warehouses, to factories, art districts, art-deco buildings and modern high-rises towering over the river.

1933 and Hongkou (Click here) The 1933 area is intriguing: the old slaughterhouse with its amazing spaces and rooftops, but Hongkou in general is dressed up with some handsome concession architecture.

Cool Docks and the Old Town (Click here) The Cool Docks is a fab spot with a gaggle of restaurants, bars and views of south Pudong; it’s fascinating to see how this old area of warehouses and shikumen buildings has been reclaimed and repackaged. Across the way, access the Old Town through Dongjiadu Rd (gradually being demolished) for traditional Shanghai images.

Lujiazui Walkway (Click here) Quite simply the best way to see modern Shanghai, as you wander through a forest of skyscrapers. This is the place to come for high-rise Shanghai shots.

Tianzifang (Click here) An excellent pocket of old red-brick shikumen houses, transformed into trendy restaurants and shops: a great place to hang out and take atmospheric photos.
