(Sheng Jinuo; Basement 2, Hongkou Plaza, 388 West Jiangwan Rd; 388 B2 churros Y10 for 6; 10am-10pm; Hongkou Football Stadium) Snacking can be sorted in a flash at San Gines (China’s first branch of the Madrid cafe dating to 1894), where glistening, deep-fried churros await. They may not catch on with older youtiao -chewing Shanghainese, who will stick to their fried dough sticks (which some say inspired churros in the first place). But more inquisitive younger Chinese are beating a path here to dunk their churros in the savoury or warm chocolate sauces or ice creams provided (or chomp them plain).

Gongqing Forest Park

This vast expanse of forested parkland (Gongqing Senlin Gongyuan; www.shgqsl.com; 2000 Jungong Rd; 2000 adult/child Y15/7.5; 6am-5pm, last entry 4pm; ; Nengjiang Rd) on the western shore of the Huangpu River is a leafy, wooded and tranquil slice of countryside in Shanghai. This is about as wild as you get in Puxi, with acres of willows, luohan pines, magnolias, hibiscus and nary a skyscraper in sight. Aim to spend half if not a whole day picnicking and wandering around this huge area, or hop into one of the buggies (Y10) for express tours around the grounds. For kids there’s a roller coaster, rock climbing, horse riding, a zip-liner and other activities. The Nengjiang Rd station near the northern terminus of metro line 8 will get you close to the western edge of the park. If you want to spend the night in the park, check into the Hongsen Forest Park Hotel ( 6532 1296; 2300 Jungong Rd; 2300 r/cabin Y280/580).

Afanti Restaurant Uighur $$

(Āfanti Meishicheng; 6555 9604; 775 Quyang Rd; 775 dishes from Y30; 11.30am-11.30pm; Chifeng Rd) Discerning fans of hearty Uighur cuisine will love the delicious dapanji (fried chicken, peppers and potatoes), gosh gorma (fried mutton; chao kaorou in Chinese) and the cumin-rubbed lamb, and don’t forget to try the homemade suan nai (yoghurt). The restaurant is in the basement of the Tianshan Hotel, next to the Silk Road Hotel. Look for the building with the golden domes.

Yang’s Fry Dumplings Dumplings $

(Xiaoyang Shengjian Guan; 810 Quyang Lu; 810 Y6 per liang (4 dumplings); 6.30am-7.30pm; Quyang Rd) If you need another opportunity to hoover up Yang’s signature, time-honoured and much-applauded fried shengjian dumplings, you’re set for brekkie, lunch or (early) dinner.
