(Lu Xun Gongyuan; 146 East Jiangwan Rd; 146 admission free; 6am-6pm; Hongkou Football Stadium) Particularly photogenic in spring and summer when the trees are in blossom, Lu Xun Park is one of the city’s most pleasant parks, with elderly Chinese practising taichi or ballroom dancing, and even the occasional retired opera singer giving a free performance. The English corner on Sunday mornings is one of the largest in all of Shanghai and a good place to chat to locals in English. You can take boats out onto the small lake. It’s a big shame about the fenced-in lawn, but the Plum Garden (admission Y15; 7.30am-6pm) is an attractive diversion.

The park used to be called Hongkou Park but was renamed because it holds Lu Xun’s Tomb, moved here from the International Cemetery in 1956, on the 20th anniversary of his death.

Gallery Magda Danysz Gallery

(www.magda-gallery.com; 188 Linqing Rd; 188 11am-6pm Tue-Sun; Huangxin Rd) Twinned with its Paris gallery and bringing further artistic frisson to Yangpu district in north Shanghai, the Gallery Magda Danysz is a bold and vibrant art space for both emerging and established Chinese and international names. Exhibitions range through an inspiring and thoughtful spectrum of visual media – check the website for details.

Hongkou & North Shanghai Sights | Drinking & Nightlife | Shopping Eating

For local Shanghai snacks and eats from across China, North Jiangxi Rd is stuffed with chefs wilting over steamers, noisy kebab sellers and red-cheeked malatang (spicy soup with meat and vegetables) vendors. Also on sale here are Shandong dabing (Shandong flatbread; Y2) and the ever-scrummy roujiamo (Y6; bun stuffed with pork and peppers). Several Buddhist vegetarian restaurants selling meat-free pot-stickers and other vegie dishes are flung out down Haimen Rd from the Xiahai Buddhist Monastery.

Guoyuan HUnAnese $

(520 Dongjiangwan Rd; 520 meals from Y30; Hongkou Football Stadium) The cool lime-green tablecloths do little to calm the red-hot flavours of this fantastic Hunan restaurant located not too far north of Hongkou Football Stadium metro station. Hunanese is another chilli-driven cooking tradition from China’s heartland. The tieban niurou (sizzling beef platter; Y30) here is a magnificent dish, but its fiery flavours are almost eclipsed by the enticing xiangwei qiezibao (Hunan aubergine hotpot). No English menu.
