Sights

There are nine official sights included in the through ticket, though you can also skip the ticket and just pay Y5 to Y10 per sight as you go. The best sights here include the Cotton Textile Mill, Old Trades House (a waxworks museum), Shadow Puppet Museum (performances 1pm to 3pm Wednesday and Sunday) and Zhou’s Miniature Carving Gallery. Half-hour boat rides (per person Y10; 8.30am-5pm) slowly ferry passengers from Number One Bridge to Dongtangtan and back. Also worth ferreting out is the Catholic Church (1866), adjacent to a convent off Qibao Nanjie, south of the canal.

Shopping & Snacking

Souvenir hunters and diners will be agog at the choice of shops and eateries stuffed along the narrow streets. Wander along Bei Dajie north of the canal for small shops selling fans, jewellery and wooden handicrafts from traditional two-storey dwellings. You’ll eventually arrive at the main bridge, where you’ll find excellent crab dumplings at Longpao Xiehuang Tangbao (Click here). South of the canal, Nan Dajie is full of snacks and small eateries like No 26, which sells sweet tang yuan dumplings, and No 9, which is a traditional teahouse with storytelling performances (admission plus pot of tea Y2; 12.30-2.30pm).
