Town or country?

Town or country? Many people like to live in very centre of big cities; others prefer to live in the suburb of even on a farm in the country. But in fact we can hardly say what is better, because there are certain advantages and disadvantages of living both in a city and a village.

Most people in developed countries are cite-dwellers, many drawn by the irresistible lure of the metropolis. The attractions of the city are many: the cosmopolitan atmosphere (foreign restaurants, different languages, and international companies), the stimulation of cultural events or the simple hope of finding work. All too many find, however, that the glamorous facade is false. One can be very alone in the city and the anonymity which at first seems to give freedom and protection later leaves just loveliness. There is a lot to do but everything is expensive. The cost of living is high. There is pollution not only of the physical but also of the moral environment (alcohol, drugs, immorality, birth outs marry) and the various pressures of urban life cause cities to breed crime. Above all, perhaps, it is the daily stresses and strains of the city which make life there a matter of survival rather than of enjoyment.

If you like slow, quiet and peaceful life, the country can offer it. The country is a place where everyone knows everyone, where people live closer to each other; they solve problems and are happy together. Only in the countryside you can have fresh air, clear water, wild flowers. People living in the country can enjoy the songs of the birds, the smell of the green grass, of fresh hay. Besides, you can grow vegetables and fruit for your table and keep animals. But not everything is so good. The poor selection of good in the shops, very poor possibilities for cultural life, those, unfortunate people who have to travel from the country to the city to get to work are the main disadvantages of living in the pastoral place.

Well, it is quite difficult to summarize everything. As for me I am quite satisfied with my life in a big city in autumn, winter and spring but I always try to spend my summer in the country.

No 27/28. Say what preparations should be taken to be ready for an interview. Explain the importance of making a favourable impression in the interviewer. Give your idea how to shine at the interview. / enumerate the ways of applying for a job. Mention the steps a job-seeker should follow (application, resume, and interview). Prove that all these steps are important in order to get a job.

[While hunting for your dream job, first you are to decide what kind of job you really want, what tasks you enjoy, what keeps you happy and motivate you to perform at your best.]

While hunting for your dream job, you have to consider 2 aspects. First, what career will suit you and give you satisfaction. Second, if you are the right person for this career. Be objective while thinking about your strengths and weaknesses.

You have to remember that prestigious, high-paying jobs demand education and experience. So you may find that you will have to take special courses to qualify for a particular kind of work.

Having found your job target you are to study the market of the offered vacancies to get an idea of necessary demands and size up your own chances.

There are several ways of doing this:

- you may use the help of employment agencies. They may be profit and non-profit. Profit employment agencies receive fees from the applicant, but they usually deal with higher salaried jobs and spend much more time with each applicant;

- you may study the ads of job opportunities either in newspapers or in the Internet;

- but since many jobs are never advertised, it’s important to keep in contact with as many acquaintances and friends as possible.

As soon as you’ve got your eye on the job, you are to make an application for the vacancy. You may apply either by letter or send your CV by e-mail.

If you are applying by letter you should send a letter of application (a lover letter) with the enclosed CV.

Since this is the first piece of information a company will receive about you, it should be well-written and eye-catching. Ideally, resume should not be longer than one page, it must be typed on a computer and make sure it has no spelling mistakes.

The contents of a resume include:

1. personal information;

2. job objective;

3. education;

4. experience;

5. skills;

6. extracurricular activities;

7. references.

Experience and references from previous employers are always important. As for students their education with references to relevant courses and recommendations from faculty members who know them well will probably be their chief assets.

List schooling or job experience most relevant to the job you want first, you may add the information about unrelated jobs at the end of resume, if you want to show you worked your way through school and have a strong work ethic.

A resume no matter how good will not get you a job by itself. But it will attract the attention of the hiring manager and secure a job interview. In order to have the opportunity of interviewing with a company you should send your resume with a connecter and how your skills would benefit that particular company.

If your resume stands out among the others you may be lucky to be called for the interview. At the interview you should try to produce a favourable first impression on your employer.

First of all dress in good taste, stylish but conservative clothes are considered professional.

Practice before the interview with a list of potential questions. Try to play detective before the interview. Investigate what skills and qualifications the employer wants from the person they are seeking for his job.

Finally, be sure you want the job. Be clear and concise in your answers. Concentrate on what the interviewer is saying and ask questions to show that you are interested and have done your homework. And of course be yourself. Remember it’s not the end of the world if you don’t get the job and the world is your oyster.
