MULTIPLE SERVICE ESTABLISHMENTS

Introductory Text

In our country we have what we call multiple service establishments. They are tailors' shops, watch repairs and all other service shops combined in one. Service is generally good, and they will fix you up in no time. But sometimes it leaves much to be desired and they fall behind with orders. However, such service establishments are an excellent arrangement for a busy man, especially since all the little things (minor services) are done while you wait.

At the tailor's one can have any piece of clothing (overcoat, dress, suit, costume, etc.) made according to the latest dictates of fashion. Besides, a tailor's shop will take care of major and minor alterations and repairs: let out or take in a coat at the seam, lengthen or shorten the sleeves, press creased clothing. If your trousers are worn or your sleeves begin to fray at the cuffs, they will set them right for you in a most expert and skilful way. Here you can order a suit or a dress to be made for you. Tailored clothes are always unique and that's why they've always been very popular.

At these service establishments they also have a dyer's and cleaner's shop (dyeing and cleaning service). If you have any stains you want to remove the dry cleaner's will take care of them. Nowadays with the help of new chemicals they can remove even the most stubborn stains without leaving any traces. But you must remember that when you send your suit to the cleaner's it might shrink.

The dyer's will make a neat job of dyeing material for you. Dark shades and hues come out better than light ones.

A busy place is the shoemaker's. They have a wide choice of leather and rubber soles and heels. They stitch burst seams, heel and tap shoes and boots and also clean and polish them. Usually they don't charge much for their services. Prices are quite reasonable.

You will also find a shoemaker's shop. He will set your watch if it is slow or fast, put a new glass in, or clean it if it needs cleaning. The watchmakers, as a rule try to make a good job of the watches they handle and when a watch comes from the watchmaker's it will keep perfect time.

One of the services available is the photographer's. You can have your photo taken there, and if it's urgent (a rush job), they will also develop and print snapshots taken by amateur photographers.

Another service establishment that we frequently visit is the barber's shop for men and the hairdresser's or a beauty parlour (salon) for women. At the barber's you can get a shave, haircut and shampoo. The services you would expect to find at the hairdresser's are permanent wave, manicure and pedicure, skin treatment (massages both manual and electrical) with all sorts of creams. A hair-dresser can colour and cut your hair and offer a new hairstyle. They will also do your hair according to the latest dictates of fashion.
