A: So, are you enjoying the festival?

B: Oh yes, I’m having a great time.

A: So tell me, how long does the festival last?

B: It lasts for a week; up until the end of August.

A: And how did the festival first begin?

B: No one really knows, but it’s been a tradition since around 1945.

A: Oh, that’s interesting. So, what are some of the events that go on during the week?

B: Well, there’s a fireworks display, a paella cooking contest, lots of singing and dancing and a huge food fight, ‘La Tomatina’.

A: It sounds like fun. How many people actually take part in the food fight?

B: There are around 30,000 people who throw about 100,000 kg of tomatoes at each other.

Dialog 2

A: School celebration I really enjoyed was our Earth Day celebration which was full of educational and fun-filled activities.

B: Me, too. First, all the students read Earth Day poems in front of the class and then we sang sing-along conservation songs, which was great fun.

A:Yeah, then we made Earth Day crafts such as recycled magazine holders, colourful Earth Day kites and tin can sculptures that were displayed in the arts and crafts Earth Day school exhibit.

B: We also held a ‘Green’ poster competition and ended the day with a tree planting ceremony.

A: I felt proud to be a part of the Earth Day celebration.

B: Me too. It gave me a sense of satisfaction to know that I was doing something valuable to help protect our planet.

On this day students and professors exchange gifts, awards are given to outstanding students and at the Lomonosov monument a cup which symbolises knowledge is lit. 2). I think April Fool’s Day is exciting. It is a great way to play jokes on people and get away with it. I feel thrilled when I play a joke on someone. It’s lots of fun. I don’t get annoyed or angry if someone plays a joke on me. It’s all part of the fun. It’s not just another boring day like all the others.

3). Victory Day in Russia is a national holiday that is held on 9th May. It officially marks the day when the war ended in 1945 and the main reason for the celebration is to remember the people who died or took part in the war in another way. For example, some citizens who did not fight had to work in the factories making guns. On 9th May, people lay flowers on graves, veterans march in parades wearing their medals and the President of Russia sends out letters to congratulate the veterans for their bravery. They hold memorial services all over Russia and take part in a minute silence, read poems and listen to traditional wartime songs.

In homes all over Russia families enjoy eating huge feasts and giving presents to one another during the unforgettable night.

Эталон ответа:

All holidays and festivals serve to meet specific social and psychological needs of the people of the country. Holidays can be religious and secular, national, local and official. The dates that are memorable to every Russian citizen are Victory Day, May Day, Constitution Day, Women’s Day, and Day of Sovereignty of the Russian Federation. These are national holidays; people do not work on these days. The most important date in Russia is Victory Day. Observed on May 9, it commemorates the Victory of the Russian troops over the Nazi invaders. On that day the veterans meet in the parks and squares of the cities to recollect the days of war and exchange greetings. Wartime music is played everywhere. At night fireworks are let off. May Day is also very popular in our country. This is the day of friendship and support.

One of the popular unofficial exciting holidays is April Fool’s Day. It’s a great way to play jokes on people and get away with it. I feel thrilled when I play a joke on someone. It’s lot of fun. I don’t get annoyed or angry if someone plays a joke on me. It’s all part of the fun and release tense. Besides, it’s not just another boring day like all the others.

My favourite holiday is New Year's Day. The coming of New Year is celebrated with a New Year Tree, presents, Grandpa Frost, European Santa Claus, and a hearty meal. In our country New Year is toasted in champagne at family gatherings. New Year’s feasts are widely covered by mass media. Our family prepares for this holiday beforehand. My father buys and brings home a beautiful New Year tree. I like to decorate the New Year tree with toys, little coloured lights, sweets and a beautiful star at the top. Our relatives come to see us at eleven o'clock in the evening. At twelve o'clock we are sitting at the table. We are glad to see the New Year in. It's a pleasant moment to get presents on the New Year's Day. I usually get many nice, useful things from my parents and relatives. We don't go to bed till morning: we watch TV, dance, eat tasty things and have a lot of fun. I enjoy this holiday very much.

Recently new national holidays have been introduced in our country. These are Christmas and Easter. Christmas and Easter are both religious holidays. One of the renewed holidays in Russia is a Day of Accord and Reconciliation. The holiday is celebrated in honour of liberation of Moscow from the Polish-Lithuanian aggressors. In 2004 the holiday became state, and in 2005 it was celebrated by all country. Since 2005 the tradition to lay flowers to a monument to Minin and Pozharsky on Red Square was established. It’s the day to unite the nation and honour the traditions of our ancestors.

My birthday is my favourite holiday too. I usually invite my friends to the party. We listen to some modern music, dance and have a special holiday dinner. Then comes the time of the birthday cake with candles and I must blow them out. I enjoy my birthday parties very much. I always receive many presents and I like to unpack them.
