OUR SITTING ROOM

Let’s have a look at the picture of our sitting room. As you come into the room you notice a piano with a low music-stool in front of it. Next to the piano there is a tall bookcase standing against the wall. On the left there is a large window. Under the window there is a radiator, but you can’t see it because it’s behind the settee. On the settee there are two cushions. The fireplace is at the other end of the room. On each side of the fireplace there is an armchair.

In the centre of the mantelpiece there is a clock and above it an oval mirror. On the right you can see a standard lamp. Opposite the fireplace you can see a small table with an ashtray and some newspapers on it. By the table there is a small chair. On the extreme right there is a radio-set. The floor is covered with a beautiful thick carpet. An electric light is hanging from the middle of the ceiling. At night when it gets dark we switch on the light and draw the curtains. During the day the light comes in through the window.

Exercise 4

Translate the following sentences into English:

1. Вітальня Марії простора, світла і вишукано вмебльована. М’який розкішний персидський килим вкриває паркетну підлогу. Стіни поклеєні шпалерами кремового кольору. Ліворуч – нове стерео обладнання, кольоровий телевізор з відео.

2. Французькі вікна вітальні мають подвійне скло. На підвіконні є декілька вазонів. На вікні – білосніжна тюль і рожеві гардини.

3. Навпроти телевізора стоїть зручне м’яке крісло, а поряд – торшер.

4. М’який шкіряний куточок складається з дивана і двох крісел. На дивані розташовані декілька декоративних подушок.

5. Останнім часом камін стає дедалі популярнішою розкішшю. Він, звичайно, використовується не для обігрівання. Для цього у нас є центральне опалення та подвійні батареї.

Моя кімната маленька, але красива. Килим на підлозі густий та різнокольоровий. Справа стоїть магнітофон, а зліва – платяна шафа. Зразу ж біля магнітофону – письмовий стіл, а далі – декілька книжкових поличок. На столі стоїть лампа. Зліва, поруч з шафою, стоїть диван з декоративними подушками на ньому. Поряд з диваном – маленьке крісло, також з подушками. Ваза з квітами стоїть на тумбі, що знаходиться між кріслом та шафою. А на підвіконні – декілька вазонів у квіткових горщиках. Стіни білі, прикрашені плакатами. У мене немає туалетного столика, тільки дзеркало на стіні. Фіранки на вікні різнокольорові – вони підходять до килима. Моя найулюбленіша річ в кімнаті – це розкішна люстра, бо я купила її за власні кошти.
