VOCABULARY FILE

ADVERTISE – to publicly inform people about a product or service, in order to persuade them to buy it or use it;

to advertise something:

advertise – to advertise sth. on TV or radio, in magazines or newspapers, or on large public notices, in order to persuade people to buy it;

promote – to make sure that people know about a new product, film, book, etc., for example by arranging special events, by offering it at a reduced price, or by talking about it on television;

market – to make sure that a product or service is sold on the most effective way, for example by deciding how much it should cost, how it should be advertised, and where it should be sold;

hype up – an informal word meaning to try to make people think that something is much better than it really is, by repeatedly advertising it, saying it is the best one of its kind etc.;

plug/give sth. a plug – informal words meaning to try to make people interested in a book you have written, a film you are appearing in, etc., for example by mentioning it in a TV or radio conversation when you are supposed to be talking about something else;

sell – to advertise something and persuade people that it is a very good product, so that they want to buy it;

push – an informal word meaning to advertise a new product very heavily, with a lot of advertisements;

a picture, set of words, film, etc. that is used to advertise a product or service:

commercial – an advertisement on television or radio;

ad – an informal word meaning an advertisement;

advert – an informal British word meaning an advertisement;

campaign/advertising campaign – a planned series of advertisements intended to advertise a product or service.

 

BUSINESS – the general area of activity that companies are involved in all the people, companies, methods used in business;

commerce – the general area of buying and selling goods and services, especially between companies or countries;

private enterprise – business that is owned by a private person or group of people and not by the government;

industry – the general area of making large quantities of goods to be sold to people, especially in factories;

business activities such as buying and selling:

trade – the buying and selling of goods and services, especially between countries;

dealings – business activities, especially those that involve the movement of money between companies, countries, banks;

operations – a company's operations are all its activities, especially in one country or one area of business;

venture – a new business activity which involves risking money;

ways of saying that a company or person takes part in business activities:

deal with – an expression meaning to do business with a particular person or organization;

trade – if a country or large organization trades with another country or large organization, they buy, sell, or exchange goods with each other;

deal in – to do business buying or selling a particular product;

operate – if a company or organization operates it takes part in business activities, especially in one country or in one kind of business;

be in business – to take part in business as the owner of a shop or company;

 

someone who works in business:

businessman/businesswoman – someone who works in business, especially as the owner or manager of a company;

entrepreneur – someone who arranges business deals and is willing to risk their money in order to make a profit;

middleman – someone who helps to arrange business deals for other people or who buys things in order to sell them to someone else.

BUY

to buy something:

get – to get something by buying it, especially ordinary things such as food, clothes, or things for your house;

purchase – a word used especially in business meaning to buy something big or expensive such as a house, a piece of land, or shares in a company;

acquire – a formal word meaning to become the owner of something such as land, a company, or a valuable object, especially over a period of time;

snap up – to buy something immediately, especially because it is very cheap or you want it very much, and you are worried that someone else might buy it first;

pick up – to buy something that you have found by chance, especially something that is unusually cheap;

splash out on – an expression used especially in British English, meaning to buy something you want such as an expensive meal, dress, etc., which you would not usually buy because it is too expensive;

to buy a lot of something:

stock up – to buy a large quantity of something you use regularly because you may not be able to buy it later, or because you are planning to use more of it than usual;

buy in bulk – to buy a large quantity of something, especially because it is cheaper;

wholesale – if you buy something wholesale, you buy a large quantity of it directly from the company that makes it because it is cheaper;

buy in – a British expression meaning to buy enough of something to last for a long time, for example because it may be difficult to buy later;

buy up – to quickly buy all of something such as land, tickets, food, etc., when there is only a limited amount available;

import – to buy goods from another country to be sold, used, etc. in your country, especially in large quantities;

someone who buys goods or services:

customer – someone who buys goods from a particular shop, restaurant, or company;

client – someone who pays for services or advice from a professional person or organization;

patron – a word used especially on public notices meaning someone who uses a hotel, cinema, restaurant, etc.;

clientele – the people, especially rich people, who regularly use a shop or restaurant, or services of a professional person;

buyer – someone who is buying something expensive such as a house, company, or painting, usually from another person;

consumer – a word used especially in a business or economic context meaning a person who buys and uses goods and services.

COMPANY – an organization that makes or sells goods or services in order to get money;

firm – a company, especially a small one that makes goods or provides services such as giving legal or financial advice;

business – a shop or company that sells goods or provides services, especially one that employs a small number of people or even only one person;

corporation – a large company that employs a large number of people;

multinational – a very large company that has offices or factories in many different countries;

conglomerate – a very large business organization that consists of several different companies which have joined together;

partnership – a company that belongs to two or more people, especially a small company that provides professional services.

 

IN CHARGE OF – in a position of control over an area of work or activity or a group of people;

be in charge – to be in a position of control over an area of work or activity or a group of people;

lead – to be in a position of control over an important activity or a large official group;

head/be head of – to be officially in charge over an area of activity or a group of people;

run – to be in charge of and look after an activity, especially one that lasts for a long time;

head up – to be in charge of a group of people or an activity, especially in business, that has been formed or started in order to deal with a particular question, problem, etc.
