A. Vocabulary work:

I. Transcribe and practice reading the following words:

II. Prepare model reading of the passage beginning with “Anyway, he insisted on my going to Europe” up to “I am not sure but that we entirely did!” (p.139-140).

III. Give the English for:

B. Comprehension tasks:

I. Translate into Russian:

II. Explain what these words/ phrases mean:

III. Explain what is meant by the following:

2. I thought I’d better see my bridges in flames behind me before I finish writing to you.

4. Must I ask your permission, or haven’t I yet arrived at the place where I can do as I please!

 

IV. Answer the questions:

1. Can you call Judy’s social life busy? What kind of events did she attend?

2. Who did Judy correspond with? Did she feel the same about writing to each of these people?

3. Where was Jerusha going to spend the summer? Why do you think she decided to give lessons?

4. What was the problem that arose after Jerusha informed the Trustee about her plans for the summer?

5. Why did Jerusha decide not to accept the Trustee’s offer to send her to Europe?

6. Could Mr.Pendleton convince her that her guardian was right wishing to send her to Europe? What caused their quarrel?

7. Did Jerusha regret having refused the trip to Europe?

8. Why was Jerusha pleased that the Trustee’s letter hadn’t come in time?

 

C.

I. Say whether the following statements are true or false and give the phrases or sentences which indicate this:

1. Jerusha’s swimming lessons were useless.

2. Jerusha liked getting Mr.Pendleton’s letters much more than Jimmy McBride’s.

3. Jerusha refused to go to Europe because she felt too indebted to her Trustee.

4. Judy accepted Sallie’s invitation to come to their camp just to tease her Daddy.

5. Judy took deep offence at Master Jervie being so dictatorial.

 

II. Build up a situation around each of the pairs of sentences below so as to use the sentences in logical sequence:

III. Dwell on the following topics:

Do you think Jerusha did the right thing when she refused to go to Europe? Should she have listened to Mr.Pendleton’s reasoning?

 

IV. Write a two-page long summary of the chapter making use of the vocabulary units from the list.
