A. Vocabulary work:

I. Transcribe and practice reading the following words:

II.Prepare model reading of the passage beginning with ”But Daddy, it is a hard bargain.” up to “…and begin again.” (letter of August Third, pp.115-116).

III. Give the English for:

B. Comprehension tasks:

I. Translate into Russian:

1. Of course I know you’re my guardian, and I have to regard your wishes in all matters but I couldn’t see any reason.

2. II. Explain what is meant by the following:

1. It’s the impersonality of your demands that hurts my feelings.

2. You’re living up to your side of the bargain - I’m being educated - and I suppose you’re thinking I’m not living up to mine!

3. You are the only person I have to care for, and you are so shadowy. You’re just an imaginary man that I’ve made up…

4. However – we will draw a veil over that and begin again.

5. He lived up to his adventurous creed.

6. I have a terrible wanderthirst…

7. Whatever Mrs.Semple’s limitations, she is a HOUSEKEEPER.

8. Their world is just this single hilltop. They are not a bit universal.

9. …and I didn’t notice any lack of social intercourse.

10. I shall be glad to see someone who speaks my language.

 

III. Answer the questions:

1. Why didn’t Jerusha write to her Daddy that summer? What hurt her feelings most?

2. What does she mean when she calls her Trustee an “ arbitrary, peremptory, omnipotent, invisible providence”? Was their bargain really hard?

3. Why did Judy finally forgive her Daddy?

4. What books did Judy read that summer? What prompted her wanderthirst?

5. What farm news did she write about?

6. Why was Jerusha looking forward to meeting Mr.Pendleton?

 

C.

I. Correct the sentences if you feel that the idea is wrong:

1. You’re the only person who cares for me, and you’re so shadowy.

2. Now, when I’m feeling awfully forgotten, I get out your card and it makes me a little happier.

3. I don’t like Sallie’s letters about the good times they are having in camp!

4. Don’t you think it was perfectly thoughtless of him to spend all the ten thousand dollars his father left for a yacht and go sailing off to the South Seas?

 

II. Give the phrases and sentences which indicate the following:

1. Jerusha’s feelings were really hurt by the Trustee’s refusal to let her go to the McBrides’camp.

2. Jerusha didn’t enjoy her stay at Lock Willow as much as she did the previous year.



3. Jerusha was working to be a real author.

 

III. Dwell on the following topics:

1. How did Judy change since the time she became a student? What new traits of her character can be noticed?

2. Do you approve of Judy’s behaviour towards her Trustee? Was she getting quite impertinent or did she simply try to be independent?

 

VI. Write a two-page long summary of the chapter making use of the vocabulary units from the list.
