4.Canada. General Outlook.

Canada is the world’s second largest country. It is situated in Northern America. It is boarded in the north by the Arctic Ocean, in the east by the Atlantic Ocean, in the south by the US and in the west by the Pacific Ocean and Alaska. The populated southern areas of Canada have a moderate climate when in the north the climate is characterized by very long, cold winters with average temperatures far below freezing and cool summer months. The most humid areas are in the west where winds from the Pacific Ocean bring a lot of rain. The climate in central parts of Canada is similar to Russian climate. The country has 10 provinces and 2 territories. The country’s symbol is the map leaf. You can see it on the Canadian flag. The capital of the country is Ottawa The largest cities are: Ottawa, Vancouver, Montreal, Toronto and Calgary.

Canada is a land of a marvelous nature. The Appalachian Mountains, the Western Cordillera are great mountain chains. The Great Lakes are situated there. The Niagara Falls is one of the most attractive sights for tourists. The view is really majestic and unforgettable.

Canada is a constitutional monarchy. Queen Elizabeth II, who is the queen of the United Kingdom, is also Canada’s Queen. But she rules mainly as a symbol of country’s history and its traditions. In fact, there are three branches of power in the country: the legislative, the executive and the judicial. Legislative power belongs to Parliament, which includes the Senate and the House of Commons. The executive power is in the hands of the Cabinet under the Prime Minister, the Governor General acts on its device. The judicial power belongs to the Supreme Court of Canada.

The population of the country is over 30 million; about 80% of it live in the south. English and French are official languages. Canada is a rich country. It is rich in forests and mountains and lakes. There are a lot of wonderful things there. But it’s true to say that Canada is most famous for its people. Whoever comes to the UK always finds intelligent people, who live in different cities, settlements and villages. Canadian people are talented. We can name many of those who are well-known worldwide, such as Celine Dion, who has very beautiful voice, Nelly Foortado, Brain Adams, Jim Carry, who are actors and singers now. Canadian people have made lots of discoveries in different fields of science and industry, medicine and culture. We know names of famous scientists such as Ernest Reserford and some others. Canada has many brilliant pilots and workers, teachers and dancers, engineers and doctors. In fact, they are excellent specialists. Canadians are open, kind and very hospitable.

The school system of Canada is very much like the one in the USA, but there are certain differences. Education in Canada is general and compulsory for children from 6 to 16 years old. Grades 1—6 are usually elementary schools, and grades 7—12 are secondary schools. In some provinces there is a kindergarten year before the first grade. There also exist some commercial high schools. There also exist Roman Catholic schools and private schools in some provinces. In most provinces private schools receive some form of public support.

There several national holidays in Canada. They are: New Year’s Day, Good Friday, Easter Monday, Victoria Day, Canada Day, Labor Day and Thanksgiving Day.

To sum it all up, as we can see, Canada is a fabulous country and I want to visit it one day!
