L 1. Sociology as science and its place among the social science

Can sociology be scientific? What studies sociology? Defining sociology. Structure of sociology as science and its functions. Relations of sociology and political science, social history, eclectic economics, social psychology, ecological geography.

 

L 2. History of sociology

Sociology timeline of selected events and influential publications. Antiquity, Enlightenment, father of sociology Comte A., introduction of positivism to sociology, Marx K. and social inequality, sociologist in society and sociological imagination, careers in sociology.

 

L 3. Contemporary sociological theories

Sociological paradigms: macro and micro perspectives. Major sociological perspectives: structural-functionalism, social-conflict theory. Applying the paradigms: comparison of major sociological paradigms, structural-functional perspective on health care, social-conflict perspective on health care, symbolic-interactionist perspective on health care.

 

L 4. Methodology of sociological research

Conducting sociological research: hypotheses, variables, causal relationship, correlation, spurious relationship, validity, reliability, objectivity. Sociological research methods: questioning (survey, population universe, sample, nonprobability samples, probability samples, random samples, questionaires, interviews, pseudo-polls). Noticing: ethnographic research, verstehen, secondary data); Analyzing; Explaining.

 

L 5. Process of information and analysis of obtained results

Analyzing: quantitative, qualitative, descriptive statistics, average, median, mode, inferential statistics, probability theories. Explaining: experiment, hawthrone effect, evaluation research. Research ethics. Research on the internet. The research process.

Survey research: Analysis and mode of administration in survey research; The sequence of a survey; Modification and extensions of the survey method; Ethical and other problems. Quantitative analysis: tabular analysis, time series analysis. Utopian analysis and design.

 

L 6. Society and social interaction

Society. Roles. Social construction of reality. Thomas Theorem. Dramaturgy: dramaturgical analysis, impression management, front-stage behavior, back-stage behavior. Ethnomethodology and conversation analysis.

 

L 7. Social groups, organizations and institutes

Social structure and social institutions. Social groups: aggregate, category, in-groups, out-groups. Reference groups. Group size: dyad, triad. Networks. Group dynamics: group formation, leadership, power, conformity, obedience, group decision making, institutions and conformity. Formal organizations: bureaucracy, oligarchy. The mcdonaldization of society.

L 8. Socialization of an individual

Socialization: definition, theories of socialization, the looking-glass self (primary and secondary groups), the I and Me (role taking), personality and social development (id, ego, superego, cognitive development, moral development, gender-role socialization). The socialization process: hidden curriculum, peer groups, mass media, anticipatory socialization.

L 9. Social inequality and social stratification

Definition of social stratification and inequality. Forms of stratification: case societies, endogamous marriages, apartheid, class societies, classless societies. Maintaining stratification: prejudice, racism, sexism, ageism, gerontologists, ableism, heterosexism, stereotypes, scapegoating, discrimination.

Status attainment: education status (reproduction, other factors, sex and racial differences, cross-cultural variations); occupational status (reproduction, other factors, sex and racial differences, cross-cultural variations); income (reproduction, other factors, sex and racial differences, cross-cultural variations).



 

L 10. Sociology of culture

Culture, culture shock, types of culture (material culture, nonmaterial culture, cultural lag, high culture, popular culture). Aspect of culture: values, norms, taboos, symbols, languages. Diversity: subculture, counterculture, assimilation, multiculturalism, ethnocentrism, cultural relativism.

L 11. Sociology of a family and gender

Sociology of family (p.1614 the Blackwell encyclopedia). Family structure. Family theory: intellectual and social context, major dimensions, current emphases. Family structure and child outcomes: social context, implications of family structure. Family structure and poverty.

Gender ideology and gender role ideology (p.1867 the Blackwell encyclopedia). Gender mainstreaming. Gender oppression. Gender, work and family.

 

Family and community: meaning of family and community, interweaving of family and community in social research, family and community in simple societies, industrialization as threat to family and community. Family conflict: models of family conflict. Family demography: common definitions, family and household composition and living arrangements, family change in other industrialized counties, social demography of the family. Family diversity as a field of study. Defining family. Dimensions of family diversity: race/ethnicity, socioeconomic status, gender, family structure, family process.

L 12. Sociology of youth

Youth/adolescent: conceptualizing youth, distinct traditions within the sociology of youth, current themes and methodological concerns. Youth sport. Student movements.

L 13. Sociology of deviant behavior

Deviance and crime. Theories of deviance: biological perspectives, structural-functionalist perspective, social bonds, structural strain, opportunity structures, social control, social-conflict perspectives, symbolic-interactionist perspective (labeling, the medicalization of deviance, cultural transmission).

White –collar crime: offenders and offenses; convictions and sentencing;

L 14. Sociology of labor and economy

Work and occupations: evolution of work; the labor force (extant of paid work, unemployment and underemployment, preparing for jobs, job outcomes); work structures (occupational structure, job segregation by sex and race; layoffs and displacement); rewards for employment (occupational prestige, intrinsic rewards or job satisfaction); work and family; trends in work (control of work, technological change, the globalization of work, the externalization of work and the erosion of jobs). Work orientation: alienation, work motivation, work commitment; social control in the workplace, gender differences.

L 15. Sociology of education and mass communication

Theoretical debates: Functionalism; Neo-Marxist Theory; Status Conflict; the Interpretive Tradition. Empirical studies: schooling and life chances; socioeconomic status and achievements; the racial gap; school effects.

Globalization and the internet.

Attending the lectures and seminars is obligatory for students. For each attending fact student will receive 1point. Seminars are designed for student work, such as open and assessment questions, brainstorming and group presentation. Therefore, students are encouraged to prepare to seminars in advance and actively participate in discussions in class. Active participation is evaluated according to the relevance of each contribution (excellent – 2p., good – 1p., passable – 0.5p.) The first mid-term exam is group presentations. In the first mid-term the 53points are equivalent of 100% or A. In the second mid-term the 47 points are equivalent of 100% or A. The second mid-term exam is divided in two parts (both parts students prepare and defend their group presentations). Presentation of academic article is valued up to 15points, while the second presentation of personal research results up to 6points. The following table shows further equivalent of percentage and points for 1st and 2nd midterms (aproximative):

Participation for office hours brings to a student additional 1point for each fact of participation. Student voluntarily presents (orally) Individual Work of Student in class at the end of a lecture. Such presentation gives a student additional 1point.

Final test: at the end of the course the students will face a final test aimed to assess their level of preparation over the issues examined during the entire course. The test will be based on multiple-choice questions. Character rating and its digital equivalent in scores are determined by the percentage of correct answers according the following table:

11. Политика и процедуры

Be tolerant and respect other people’s opinions. Please, formulate objections in correct form. Plagiarism and other forms of cheating are not allowed. Prompting and copying during IWS, midterm and final exam, copying of solved problems by others, passing exam for another student are unacceptable. Student convicted of falsifying any information of the course, will get a final rating «F».
