WiNDSOR CASTLE

Welcome to Windsor Castle, the oldest and largest occupied castle in the world. Windsor is one of the official residences of Her Majesty The Queen, whose personal standard flies from the Round Tower when she is in residence. As the Castle is a working royal palace, official engagements may occasionally limit access to those areas usually open to visitors.

Guidebooks and audio tours

The Official Guidebook introduces the Castle's long and fascinating history, and describes its important role today in the life of the Royal Family. It includes a fully illustrated tour and guide to the magnificent works of art on display. The Official Guidebook is the perfect souvenir of your visit and can be purchased on leaving the Admission Centre in the Courtyard Shop.

Complimentary audio tours can be obtained on leaving the Admission Centre at the start of your visit. There is a special audio tour for the visually impaired, and printed scripts are available for visitors with hearing impairments.

Guided tours of the Castle Precincts

Escorted by Castle wardens, the tours are free of charge and last approximately 30 minutes. They depart at regular intervals throughout the day from the Admission Centre and finish at the entrance to the State Apartments.

St George's Chapel

An evening service (normally sung) is held daily at 1 7:1 5, and visitors are welcome to attend. The Chapel is open only to worshippers on Sundays. Details of all services can be found on the noticeboard by the entrance to the Chapel. Visitors arriving after 1 5:00 from March to October are advised to visit St George's Chapel first, before it closes.

Visitors with children

For those visiting with children, there is a special family audio tour and range of activity trails. Please ask about the programme of family workshops and activities during school holidays and at weekends.

Shopping

The Upper, Middle and Lower Ward shops offer a wide range of gift items designed exclusively for the Royal Collection, including books, postcards, china, jewellery, replicas and children's toys. If you would like to place an order after your visit, please go to our online shop at www.royalcollection.org.uk

Changing of the Guard

The Changing of the Guard takes place at 11:00, weather permitting, from Monday to Saturday between April and the end of June, and on alternate days for the rest of the year, with the exception of Sundays. Please ask a Castle warden to direct you to where the ceremony can be watched.

Refreshments

From April to September, ice-cream and bottled water can be purchased from the Courtyard and Middle Ward shops. There are many restaurants, cafes and shops selling refreshments nearby in the town. Visitors wishing to leave the Castle for refreshments may obtain re-entry permits from the audio tour return point in the Lower Ward. Eating and drinking are not permitted inside the Castle.

Lavatories and baby-care

Please see the map overleaf for the location of lavatories and baby-care facilities.

Photography and mobile phones

Photography and filming (for private use only) are permitted in the Castle Precincts. Mobile phones must be switched off inside the State Apartments and St George's Chapel.

Unlimited Admission

The purchase of your ticket entitles you to register for 1 2 months of unlimited admission to Windsor Castle. (The unlimited admission offer does not apply to complimentary tickets.)

To register for unlimited admission, please complete the attached Registration Form, detach, and hand it in at the designated registration point. Registration must take place on the day of your first visit, and forms will not be accepted once you have left the site.

You must keep the original purchased ticket, which has your unique reference number on it. On subsequent visits, you will be asked to produce the ticket and provide proof of identity, such as a passport, birth certificate, driving licence, credit card, or utility bill. You then receive a complimentary ticket for the day.

Free admission is unavailable on up to 5 days each year when the site is open to the public and when the site is closed. As Windsor Castle is a working royal palace, opening arrangements and the visitor route may be subject to change at short notice.

Before planning a visit, please consult the Royal Collection website www.royalcollection.org.uk or telephone the Ticket Sales and Information Office on 020 7766 7335 to check which days are excluded and for admission details.

You must inform the Ticket Sales and Information Office in writing of any change of name or address at least 28 days before subsequent visits. The personal details shown on your proof of identity must match those on our records. The benefit of unlimited admission is not transferable.
