KG GATSCHHÜPFER (MOODHOPPER) (GL-MTV11)

PARTNER
The “Kindergruppe Gatschhüpfer” (the German word for children´s group of mud-hopper) is a kindergarten close to nature where children are out of doors, playing in nature all-season. In case of bad weather conditions the children can warm up or get dry inside a large Mongolian nomad tent (a yurt) or their nearby kindergarten room. The Yurt is located in natural environment, beautiful scenery surrounded by meadow and woods. In May 2009 the kinder group “Gatschhüpfer” was founded by parents who got sick of the conventional kindergarten, where children spend a good deal of the time indoors and the groups of children are far too big. The “Gatschhüpfer”-group simply consists of 14 children between 2-6 years old, in company with 2 educators. In total there are 4 kindergarten teachers (Alex, Peter, Heimo, Linda) who are trained in Montessori- and Moto-pedagogical skills and expertise. The concept of a “Kinder group” is different to the conventional Kindergarten. In a Kinder group children have the possibility to play in a more free way. There is enough time for them to enrol themselves. And with the “Gatschhüpfer” they do so outdoors mostly. Due to the reduced number of children the atmosphere is more familiar and cosy then in a conventional Kindergarten. Also the learning of social skills is more beneficial in a small group. So they learn to cope with conflicts and they establish and intensify their relationships. Once a week Heimo provides his service to the kinder group. He is a zoologist from the University of Vienna. They discover the flora and fauna together with him and the children benefit a lot from his knowledge. The educators offer various project activities along the seasons. A good example is the winter project:”How do humans and animals survive winter season outdoors?” The children learned how to dress properly and they got to know various materials, like wool, leather and artificially produced fabrics like gore-tex. (In summer they visited sheep farming where they could watch the sheep-shearing.) They also got to know how Inuit survive winter. Since the children have been very enthusiastic about this, they built themselves a big igloo. Furthermore they discover the tracks of animals in the snow and watch birds at their feeding station. Even the fox and the wild boar are their neighbours. That´s quite exiting! Grenzenlos is a Vienna-based NGO different from the project. We are supporting the project and the intern/volunteer before and during her/his stay and we are organizing the logistics. Grenzenlos identifies and prepares hosting projects, organises the accommodation, offers a basic introduction and orientation for the participant after arrival, helps with finding language courses if needed, offers a mentoring program, helps with all administrative matters and conducts the evaluation meeting at the end of stay.
WORK
Your day starts at around 8.30. You meet the group at the metro station Heiligenstadt and together with the two kindergarten teachers you take the children by bus up to the Kahlenberg. Enjoying the beautiful view on Vienna, the children sing their morning song and welcome everybody. Then the group takes a walk through the grassland and the nearby forest. For sure they will find some interesting stones or animals to watch on your way and perhaps there will be enough time to play on one of the beautiful playgrounds. If the walk takes a long time, everybody arrives hungry. Then they will have a picnic. The walk ends at the kindergarten grassland. One of the team starts the fire to heat the mongolian yurt while the others play at the huge meadow. There is enough time for the children to find their own games. At around 12 o’clock it’s time for lunch. One of the team prepares the kindergarten room for having lunch (arrange tables and chairs and set the table, then fetch the meals from the cantina), while the others take a small walk with the children towards the room. There you help the children washing their hands and support the team during lunch time. After lunch it´s time to clean the kitchen, and for the children it´s time to relax, reading books or playing quiet games. Then you leave the room again. While the group takes a long walk or stops at the big playground area, one of the team accompanies the younger children back to the tent, so they can have a nap. Round 14.30 or 15.00, the first parents arrive to take their children home. Also for you, it’s time to leave the magical Vienna Forest. Because you are an international volunteer, the children will be very interested in where you come from and how the every-day life is like in your country. For sure they will ask you about animals and plants at home. Perhaps you want to start a country project. You can take some photos with you to create a big collage together with the children, or you could teach them some words or songs in your language.
ACCOMODATION AND FOOD
Volunteers are accomodated in single rooms either in student hostels or shared flats. Kitchen and wahsing facilities are provided.
LOCATION & LEISURE ACTIVITY
The Project is located in Vienna, capital of Austria. Vienna has 1,6 million inhabitants. Located in the centre of the new Europe and heavily influenced by its history as the capital of the Austrian Hungarian Empire, it builds a bridge between east and west. Many historical buildings offer loads of sight seeing opportunities, but fortunately Vienna is also influenced by modern times: it has a lively night life, many opportunities to practice sport and a large cultural programme.
REQUIREMENTS
The volunteer should like children and respect their needs, enjoy being outdoors regardless of weather conditions. Note that you have to bring proper clothes like Rain jacket, very warm jacket, waterproof shoes etc) She or he should be a good teamplayer and support the team during the day. It would be perfect, if the volunteer has already experience in working with children (babysitting, younger brother or sister, internship in a kindergarten etc)

KINDERGARDEN SIMSALABIM (GL-MTV9)

PARTNER
Childcare Simsalbim Zwerge is a parental organized private childcare in Vienna. The name of our children’s group is the ’Simsalabim Zwerge’, translated into English it means the “Hey Presto Dwarves”. It was founded over 10 years ago by parents for children between 2.5 and 6 years. The group is organized and administrated by the parents themselves. The experience of self organization gives the possibility of meeting the needs of individual children and was really great for almost all parents over several “child-generations”. Our organization is characterized by the division of responsibilities between the parents, kindergarten staff, and – whenever possible – of our children Grenzenlos is a Vienna-based NGO different from the project. We are supporting the project and the intern/volunteer before and during her/his stay, and we are organizing the logistics. Grenzenlos identifies and prepares hosting projects, organises the accommodation, offers a basic introduction and orientation for the participant after arrival, helps with finding language courses if needed, offers a mentoring program, helps with all administrative matters and conducts the evaluation meeting at the end of stay.
WORK
There are many reasons for us to host a volunteer. Firstly the group of children will be refreshed by up to six new members with an age below three years. A volunteer will have the possibility to play and to give special attention to the very little kids without any drawbacks for the older ones. Secondly we believe that meeting other cultures is very enriching and should be further aided. At the moment we have four children where at least one parent’s mother tongue is different from German – two of them speak English, one speaks Spanish as well as Serbo-Croatian, and one is from Finland. We furthermore have one member of staff who originates from the Nederland. Moreover, our children attended an English course where they had a lot of fun. All these experiences with other cultures and languages had really positive resonance from the children, the kindergarten staff, and the parents. An international volunteer could extend these experiences and be an extra impulse for our children to be open and tolerant towards other cultures. There is no normal day in the Simsalabim children’s group – but below is an example of what could happen. 08:00 – 10:00: Children arrive one after the other. They say goodbye to their parents and begin to play, volunteers are asked to help with the arrival, dressing off and to play with the kids 10:00 – 10:30: Morning snack, e.g. fruits, cucumbers, tomatoes, cheese, bread, sausage, cornflakes, volunteers should help the kids if needed and can also join the breakfast 10:30 – 13:00: Outdoor activity, park, swimming, zoo, theater, … 13:00 – 14:00: Lunch prepared by parents in alternating manner. 14:00 – 14:30: Resting time, i.e. reading books, sleeping and silent playing. 14:30 – 16:00: Educational games, playing in the kindergarten, slipping down our indoor-slide. Children are also getting picked up one after the other at alternative times. The volunteer will work together with the staff of the kindergarten team. At the moment we have four employed staff members and at least two of them take care of the children at the same time. There are 14 children at maximum present in the kindergarten. Depending on the profile of the volunteer he/she will have tasks like doing activities with the children (e.g. reading and playing), feeding the children, taking care during transportation and some household chores. Furthermore, it would be very nice if the volunteer can come up with some individual projects introducing the volunteer’s home country and culture to the children. Feel free to bring songs, games, recipes, pictures etc from your home!
ACCOMODATION AND FOOD
Volunteers are acomodatet in single rooms either in student hostels or in shared flats. Partly volunteers can eat within the project and in the flats kitchen and washing facilities are provided. Do not expect luxury
LOCATION & LEISURE ACTIVITY
The Project is located in Vienna, capital of Austria. Vienna has 1,6 million inhabitants. Located in the centre of the new Europe and heavily influenced by it’s history as the capital of the Austrian Hungarian Empire, it builds a bridge between east and west. Many historical buildings offer loads of sight seeing opportunities, but fortunately Vienna is also influenced by modern times: it has a lively night life, many opportunities to practice sport and a large cultural programme. The project is located in the 3rd Viennese district not far from the city center. The location of the Kinder group is divided in 4 main rooms: The so called “Tobezimmer“ (Riot room), the community room, the Kuschelzimmer (cosy room) and the kitchen where we also eat our meals. support for volunteers: During the working time volunteers can eat their meals in the kindergruppe. We take care the most of the food is biologically produced. The Simsalabim children’s group benefits from many highly engaged parents who build up a very dynamic – sometimes also crazy and funny – group. There are quite a lot of activities from the parents beside the kindergarten where the volunteer probably will be welcome. Volunteers are invited to take part in all staff-meetings as well as in the meetings with the parents. One of the parents will function as the volunteers mentor and will be available for feedback as well as for further needs of the volunteer and support the communication between the staff as well as with Grenzenlos if any matter occurs. Furthermore volunteers are invited to join the regular meetings and free time activities organized by Grenzenlos.
REQUIREMENTS
The main requirement for any volunteer/intern is her/his openness and respect towards the children. The volunteer has to be an open minded enthusiastic person who likes children and is interested in working with them. It would be very nice if she/he would be social with good communication skills. Previous experience in working with children can be from advantage. She/he should speak basic English or German.

EUROPAHAUS DES KINDES (GL-MTV6)

PARTNER
At the Europahaus des Kindes, a part of ‘Kinderfreunde Wien’, we offer a creche for children over 1 year old, 3 bilingual groups (English – German), a family group for children between the ages 2 and 6, and 2 after-school groups (Hortgruppen) for children who attend the local primary schools. Our children are collected daily from 2 primary schools and brought here by bus. On arrival, the children first enjoy their lunch and afterwards they do their homework with help from the teachers and the volunteer. After the children have finished their homework, there is enough time left over to play with friends or choose from an array of activities which are offered from their teacher. We offer a variety of different activities to the children, depending on both their age and their likes, in order to aid their development through play. The animal farm at the back of our big backyard is particularly popular with the Hort children as they are able to experience first hand what farm animals are like while both, children and animals, spend a lot of time in the garden. Despite our beautiful surroundings, the children are taken on many trips into the city centre. These include visiting museums, ice-skating, swimming, going for walks,... Grenzenlos is a Vienna-based NGO different from the project.
WORK
The main idea is to have a young person from another country present and to let children get to know this country, culture and language by his/her daily presence. The project of the volunteer will consist of introducing different aspects of his /her culture into the leisure time programme of the children. It would be especially great to receive a person interested in physical activities as our grounds offer excellent opportunities for playground games, tennis, volleyball, football etc. As we consider this an important part of a healthy life for the children and it enables us to integrate volunteers with limited language knowledge: playing games and doing sports together knows no boundaries! For the implementation and the planning of the leisure time activities in the regular schedule, the staff will be there to support. Therefore, the volunteer will not be alone with the whole group of children, but always shares responsibility with the rest of the team. This project would give the volunteer the opportunity to develop skills working with children, encourage team-work and provide a supportive atmosphere in which the volunteer is able to bring ideas from their own country and experiment with them. We have two classes, with 17 or 25 child, all with the age from 6 to 10 years. We need the volunteer 2 days a week from 10.00 a.m. to 5.30 p.m. and three days a week from 12.00 a.m. to 5.30 p.m. Once a month there is a meeting with all the teachers from 6.00 p.m. to 8.00 p.m. At 12.00 we pick up of the children from school (with a bus) and at 12.30 there will be a common lunch, where the volunteer can join the meal or will help us to pick the other kids from school at 1 p.m. (also with a bus), the children start doing their homework and take as long as they need. The kids who take the later bus will have lunch at 1.30 (where the volunteer can join the meal), and than they have to do their homework too. The volunteer can assist them with the subjects he/she understands. When the children are finished, the volunteer will spend the rest of the afternoon with them and will also some afternoon programme with them. Around 2.30 p.m. there will be a snack provided for the kids. At 4.30 p.m. some of the children will be picked up from their parents at Europahaus, others are going with the bus to another kindergarten from Kinderfreunde where they get picked up by their parents. The volunteer and the teachers have to take the bus too. Normally on Fridays we do not make any homework so we have time to do some trips to the city or to the surroundings of the school or, if the weather does not allow this, continue with our projects. As mentioned above, the main idea of the project is to challenge the children with the presence of a volunteer from a different country, who speaks a different language and knows different customs, habits etc. With this as a start off, the volunteer develops ideas for activities and can implement these in accordance with the schedule of the teachers. The projects of volunteers in the past years that proved to be interesting for the children and the volunteers are: Projects involving music and singing: music and songs from the other country, learning these songs together or making music together. (also dancing) all kinds off creative work: projects with clay, wood, paper, paint, according to the seasons or for special occasions projects with a special topic, like the country the volunteer comes from, ‘Europe’, theatre, etc. We would like to include the volunteer in the gymnastics- and outdoor programme: outdoor games like football, basketball, tennis, and other out door activities in the surrounding forest will be a big part of the leisure time, when the weather allows it. Most activities and projects can be done with a few of the children, as well as with the whole group, depending on the resources and what the volunteer feels comfortable with. We hope that the volunteer will transport his/her background and culture to the children and in this way will create an international atmosphere within the daily life of the children
