Vocabulary of modern English

VOCABULARY OF MODERN ENGLISH

FALL 2009

15 classes (30 hours)

Instructor Oleksandr V. Horchak

Course Objectives:

The objective of this course is to help you improve your English vocabulary and to take you to an advanced level of knowledge of English words and phrases. If you assiduously prepare for each of the classes, by the end of the course you will be capable of using at least 2000 new words and phrases. The final test of the course (30th class) will check your success in comprehension of the new vocabulary items and your knowledge will be assessed in accordance with the following criteria:

1) Ability to give definitions to the words;

2) Ability to match set expressions and collocations;

3) Ability to make a correct translation into your mother tongue and vice versa;

4) Ability to distinguish the meaning of the word/phrase in the context.

Course Evaluation:

1) 11 Classes (maximum for each class 4 points).

TOTAL FOR CLASSES: 44 POINTS

Specifications!!!

Maximum grade (4points) for each class is calculated in the following way: 3 points for dictation on the words (your ability to translate from Ukrainian into English and vs.) + 1 point for homework. You can do your homework either in the copybook or in the copies of your own. If you do your homework in the copies, then each copy should be signed to be sure that this is your copy.

2) 3 Tests (maximum for each test 7 points).

Specifications!!!

Tests can be in the form of written presentation and its oral defense, actual written test at the class or oral exam combined with some written work. You will be notified of the exact date and type of the test at least a week before the testing day.

TOTAL FOR TESTS: 21 POINTS

3) Vocabulary Book5 POINTS.

Specifications!!!

Since the main idea of this course is to enhance your vocabulary knowledge, you will be responsible for creating your own vocabulary (book), where you will write down all the new words/collocations/phrases/idioms you study throughout the course. In other words, by the end of the first term you should have 11 sections in your vocabulary, each corresponding to the topic of each class. For instance, the first section in your book will be called " Countries. Nationalities and Languages. History and Language”, etcetera.Pay attention that the number of words/collocation/phrases/idioms per each section SHOULD NOT BE LESS THAN 40. To conclude, your vocabulary should be presented to the instructor on the 15th class (day of the FINAL TEST).

4) Final Test (in MOODLE SYSTEM) – 30 POINTS

Specifications!!!

The test is based on the topics covered throughout the term. To get an idea what types/kinds of questions one should expect on the test in Moodle System you will be offered to do a practice test in the MOODLE SYSTEM, which will include all the types/kinds of questions that will appear on the FINAL TEST. Practice test will not be graded.

TOTAL = 100 POINTS

Literature for the Course:

While preparing for the classes you should keep in mind that you are responsible not only for making all the homework but also for making all the necessary copies needed for the class that will follow. Look at the course description and see what books you will need for the next class. The resource centre has all the books needed for the studying process but they are all of internal use (you can either take them and work in the centre or make copies from them).

1) English Vocabulary in Use Pre-Intermediate and Intermediate (green cover);

2) English Vocabulary in Use Upper-Intermediate and Advanced (blue cover);

3) Wordbuilder

4) English Vocabulary in Use Advanced (black cover)

All the necessary books that are available in the Resource Centre the instructor will bring to the class and you don't have to make copies of them for the class (except for the English Vocabulary in Use Advanced). At the same time, my past experience has shown that students would rather make all the copies from all the books for the class to note down instructor’s translation of the words directly into their copies.

Course Requirements:

Students are required to attend all class sessions, to participate actively, to complete homework assignments prior to class, and to bring dictionaries (Oxford, Longman, Cambridge) to every class. In addition, each of the students is required to hand in the Test Copybook (the copybook for dictations that will be practiced every class) prior to second class of the course.

Because this is a specialty-oriented course, I have high expectations of your interest, classroom participation, and feedback from you regarding particularly creative or constructive modifications.

This course is a joint responsibility.I am committed to making this a stimulating and enjoyable course. If you have any questions, concerns, or suggestions, please share them sooner rather them later! If you are having any difficulty with the course make sure that you come and talk as soon as possible in the semester.
