1) On the 8th of October during the 111th the Nobel Prize Ceremony one of the awards was given to the European Union (EU) "for over six decades contributed to the advancement of peace and reconciliation, democracy and human rights in Europe".

2) Turkish civilian planes are no longer allowed to fly over Syria. This comes just days after Turkey intercepted a Syrian-bound plane, claiming it carried Russian-made munitions for the Syrian army. The Syrian foreign ministry said its ban on Turkish flights was in retaliation for a similar move from Ankara.

Turkey has not announced such a measure, although it has said it will continue to ground Syrian civilian planes it suspects are carrying military cargo.

3) The UN Security Council has adopted a resolution paving the way for military intervention in Mali to retake the north from Islamist extremists.

The resolution requests a detailed plan for such an operation from African organisations within 45 days. The resolution is an attempt to re-energise the West African regional body Ecowas' effort, expressing readiness to respond positively to a plan.

4) At least 15 people have been killed and up to 30 wounded in a car bomb attack on a market in north-west Pakistan, local security officials say.

Some reports said a suicide attacker detonated the bomb in the town of Darra Adam Khel. It was apparently aimed at a pro-government militia set up to fight the Taliban, local security officials said. Officials said no group had claimed responsibility for the bombing, but previous attacks in the area have been blamed on the Taliban.

5) Two rare tornadoes have hit New York City's borough of Queens and Brooklyn, damaging homes, causing blackouts and throwing debris into the air. No injuries were reported, but the storms forced the suspension of the US Open tennis tournament. It was said the severe weather was likely to continue overnight as a cold front from the west clashed with the warm, moist air.
