1. Let’s talk about your hobbies. What do you do in your free time?

What is a hobby? It’s what you can and like to do when you have free time. We choose a hobby according to our character and taste. When we have a hobby our life becomes more interesting.

Hobbies differ like tastes. There are 1019 hobbies known in the world. Hobbies are divided into 4 large groups: doing things, making things, collecting things and learning things.

The most popular hobby is doing things. It includes a wide variety of activities from gardening to travelling and from chess to volleyball. Gardening is one of the oldest of man’s hobbies. Playing computer games is a relatively new hobby.

Making things includes drawing, painting, making sculpture, designing costumes, handicrafts.

Almost everyone collects something at some period of time.

No matter what kind of hobby a person has, he always has the opportunity of learning from it. Learning things can be the most exciting aspect of a hobby.

The most popular with teenagers hobbies are surfing the Internet, playing computer games, talking on mobile phones, watching TV, listening to music, skateboarding and roller skating, etc.

In my free time I prefer taking photos. I find it amazing. I can watch photo shots for hours or endlessly change them in Photoshop program. I am sure it is a long-term leisure as I really enjoy it. I also like playing football and skateboarding in summer and playing in a swimming pool in winter.

2. Do you find it useful to read books? Why (not)?

As for me, I like reading and I can read almost all kinds of books. My favourite books are quite different. I read adventures, detectives and biographies of famous people. My flat has always been full of books. Both parents read newspapers and books. In my opinion, reading is very useful because books enrich our experience with that of other people. Besides, books help us to continue education. I’m sure that a reader lives a richer life than a non-reader. The time spent on a good book is never wasted. Books teach us what is right and what is wrong, to understand the world and people in it and at the same time tell us exciting stories.

3. What questions can you ask a British friend about his/her free time?

1. What do you do in your free time?

2. How often do you spend your free time with your parents?

3. Do you have enough free time?

4. How do you prefer to spend your free time?

5. Do you enjoy simple pleasures linked with nature?

6. What’s your hobby?

7. What do you prefer: learning things, doing things, making things or collecting things?

8. Do you prefer indoor or outdoor activities?

9. Are you a nature lover?

10. Which recreational activities have you tried in your life?

4. Give me some advice on what to do in my free time.

If you have free time, it’s better to spend it with your family or friends in the country. You may go fishing. There are many beautiful rivers and lakes in Belarus. Or you may take part in the mushrooming fun. For some it is sport, for some it’s a matter of extra money. For others it’s the way to spend good time among beautiful woods.

5. Many parents think that children should spend less time playing computer games, that they should play outside or do some sport instead. What do you think about this?

I fully agree with this. On-line games are very popular as a cure for boredom but don’t let this pastime dominate in your life. Children should be more active, they should spend more time outdoors walking, playing sports games and exercising. Our mind and body need constant training to be healthy.
