Analysis of vocabulary items

To play the piano, to play with toy, to play a role, to play a trick. The word play should be included in the vocabulary because the phonetic form and spelling is very simple; it conforms to the rules of reading; it doesn`t have any derivatives; grammar forms of this verb are also correspond to the rule, because it`s a regular verb;

Macmillan dictionary gives the following definitions:

BUT all of them have the same equivalents in mother tongue and combined with one and the same words in both languages, though first 4 are more common in usage, the 5th meaning shouldn`t be given at once with them. So,as I`ve said, collocations are different and we can use them like in our language and in different situations.

As a contrary we may consider the word underground as a noun. It`s a compound word, that`s why it`s rather long, but it becomes simpler in our mind when we see its parts which are simple in spelling, phonetics. This word corresponds the rules of reading and grammatically it`s used like any noun. The problems consist in meaning. Longman dictionary gives two definitions this word as a noun:

a) British English TTT a railway system under the ground

b) PP an illegal group working in secret against the rulers of a country

We should present only the 1st meaning because the 2nd one hardly be necessary in communication. Moreover the difficulty is in the compounding. Because the word may be understood in the other meaning of this word, which belongs to the adjective. I think it`s better to present it with the help of picture.

The usage of this word is rather clear, we should just emphasize the linguistic environment (the usage with the definite article)

Unit 1 Section 3

There are 2 main ways of presenting vocabulary in this unit. They are: translation, pictures.. The pictures are very precise in demonstration of this concrete example, the verb to turn with different prepositions, but translation prevents children from using their brains and context (which given to each expression).

Actually the problem is that the way of translation is used for presenting each word. Trough the whole textbook the vocabulary basically is a list of words with transcriptions and translations, whereas it can be done in English as simple explaining phrases. The words which are presented in the section are rather simple in their form, they are rather popular in everyday speech to express our interests and entertainment, some problems connected with them.

I like the presenting of difference between English and British spelling and pronunciation. I think pupils are adult enough not to be overladen the information. And it`s useful because they can meet such differences in life and they will be prepared for them, they don`t sit down in a puddle.

Moreover in this section the words child and kid are given as stylistic synonyms, and the difference between them are also explained. I think both these words are popular in speech, they are easy to be remembered, and to my mind concentration on this difference is very useful.
