16. British customs and traditions

16. British customs and traditions

1. Let's talk about British customs and traditions. What can you tell me about main holidays in Britain?

Christmas and Easter are main religious holidays, which millions of believers all over the country celebrate. Christmas and Easter are not only colorful and happy, with interesting traditions for children and adults. These holidays bring people back to Biblical values and give them a chance for a family reunion.

St. Valentine's Day is most popular with teenagers. It is on the 14th of February. People buy or make Valentine cards and send them to somebody they love.

Mother’s Day and Father’s Day are special days, when children of all ages thank their parents for their love and care. Flowers and cakes are traditional gifts. (Sometimes the whole family goes to church and then they have a special festive dinner)

2. Do you know any British national dish?

I know the British like to eat pancakes. They even have a holiday - Pancake day. I may share the recipe with you. Take milk and eggs. Add some flour, sugar and salt, and mix well. Then fry this mixture on a frying pan in vegetable oil. They eat pancakes with butter and jam.

Believe me, it is very tasty!

3. What questions can you ask a British teenager about their customs?

1) What is the oldest custom in your country? 2) Are there any strange traditions in your culture? 3) What is the traditional dish in your country? 4) Do you follow/observe all the traditions? 5) What are the most popular (religious/ secular) holidays in your country?

4. Give me a piece of advice on what sights to visit in London to see British traditions.

You should visit Buckingham Palace and see a fascinating tradition – the Сhanging of the Guard. I would recommend you to see famous Beefeaters in the Tower of London. You should visit Westminster Abbey because it is a place where the kings and queens are crowned and famous people buried.

5. Are the British proud of their past?

The British people are proud of their past. Great Britain is one of very few countries, where the monarchy still exists. The British take care of old buildings, parks and other historical objects. In British castles knights’ tournaments and international medieval festivals take place. They attract spectators and participants from many countries of the world. During several days, everybody can feel the atmosphere of the middle Ages.
