Call for Participation: Project „New Ways“

Call for Participation: Project „New Ways“

Within the project "New Ways to Civic Engagement of Children and Young People in Ukraine" – which is funded by the Foreign Office to Develop Cooperation with Civil Society in the Eastern Partnership Countries – we are searching for further project partners.

The project "New Ways to Civic Engagement" focuses on the special situation of children and young people in Ukraine who have been hit especially hard by the political and economic crises. Their daily struggle for life allows them only little room for carefree leisure time and individual development. Where can these children and young adults find a protected area that, apart from support and supplies, provides them with the intellectual skills that are essential for developing a political opinion and participating in civil society?

How can children and young people develop their democratic potential? What are the basic conditions for civic engagement and participation of children and adolescents in Ukraine? Who are desirable partners not only in Ukraine, but also in Germany to build a democratic civil society organization? Which traditions of neighbourly help, municipal autonomy and solidarity can be developed?

To discuss these questions in depth, we are planning a conference in Berlin with German and Ukrainian Schools or Universities and civil society partners from 7th to 9th of December 2015. The analyses and discussions should focus on both the current situation in Ukraine and on civil society development potentials that exist mainly in schools and universities. In particular, we are searching for school projects and youth work as the starting point for the development of civil society. In addition we would like to give scientific colleagues and civil society organizations from Ukraine the opportunity to exchange project ideas and cooperation options. An active involvement of pupils and students from the two countries is particularly desirable to initiate student projects and theses that operate locally.

We would be pleased if we have been able to arouse your interest in this project! If you are

- a Professor who has worked and published already about civil society issues (such as to volunteering in children and adolescents, Democracy Education, AIDS prevention for children and adolescents), or if you are

- a Student of sociology, politics, law or an adjacent field of study and if you are engaged in voluntary service for children and young people during leisure time, then

Ø please send us a brief outline of your research topics (Professor) / your study plan (Student), your motivation and your expectations concerning our conference in English or German until 5.10.2015 to DAAD representative in Odessa, Regina Uhlen (Uhlen-DAAD@gmx.de)

Ø We expect the willingness to take over an active part (lecture, discussion participation) at the Conference.

Ø If your application for the conference is successful, travel and accommodation costs will be covered.

Kind regards
