Recruitment.

People are integral part of any organization today. No organization can operate without its human resources. The process of finding people for particular jobs is called recruitment or especially in American English hiring. Someone who has been recruited is a recruit A company may recruit employees directly or use outside specialists recruiters - recruitment agencies. Outside specialists known as headhunters may be called on to choose people for very important jobs persuading them to leave the organization they already work for.

Nowadays, when businesses become more and more competitive, the choice of the right person for the right job is crucial for the company’s performance. A well-selected and well-placed employee will contribute to the efficient running of the organization.

The process of hiring begins with human resource planning (HRP) which helps to determine the number and type of people for organization needs.

It should be noted that hiring is an ongoing process and not confined to formative stages of an organization. Employees leave the organization in search of greener pastures, some retire and some die in the saddle. More importantly an enterprise grows, diversifies, takes over the other units all necessitating hiring of new men and women. In fact the hiring function stops only when the organization ceases to exist.

Hiring involves two broad activities: Recruitment and Selection

Recruitment and selection are systematic procedures that involve many activities. The process includes the step like HR planning, attracting applicants and screening them. It is a very important activity as it provides the right people in the right place at the right time.

Candidates are initially asked to provide a curriculum vitae (CV) or resume which gives information about their qualification, experience and skills.

Selection is carried out during the recruitment process. There are some specific stages of the process, such as preliminary interview, various tests, checking of references, final interviews.

Job interviews can generally be divided in to three main types. The first is the traditional interview. This is a series of standard questions about qualifications, work experience, knowledge and expectations. The second is the “case interview”, when the interviewer presents a problem and then follows this with a series of questions to find out how the candidate would approach the problem. The third type is what is known as the behavioral interview. Its aim is to find out how the candidates behave in certain situations.

To define recruitment we can approach it as a process of finding and attracting capable applicants for employment. The process begins when new recruits are being looked for and ends when their applications are submitted. The result is a pool of applicants from which new employees are selected. Theoretically, recruitment process is said to end with receipt of application in practice the activity extends to the screening applicants as to eliminate those who are not qualified for the job.
