Companies fear for suppliers

European groups worried about suppliers

Large European companies are becoming increasingly worried about the financial health of their suppliers.
Industries from carmakers and aerospace to electrical and construction equipment manufacturers say their main concern is whether some of their suppliers can survive.
“It goes without saying that we are monitoring the health of our suppliers closely,” said Wendelin Wiedeking, chief executive of carmaker Porsche.
Guillermo Amann, chief of staff at Ormazábal, a €500m ($670m) Spanish maker of electrical components, added: “This is the most important problem we are facing. Some suppliers are at risk of suspension of payment. The smaller the company, the higher the risk that they are not going to survive.”
Denis Ranque, chief executive of Thales, the French defence electronics company, said: “If I have one concern, that is it.”
As a result, companies are being forced to take extraordinary steps to prop up their suppliers. EADS, the aerospace group, this month helped one of its suppliers, Latécoère, overcome liquidity difficulties.
Other industry executives have suggested companies might have to take over some suppliers. A senior manager at a German carmaker said: “If a key supplier was to get into real difficulty, it may be easier for us just to take them over than to let them fail.”
Herbert Diess, purchasing director for carmaker BMW, said a possible solution could be to lift the prices paid for some components for a certain amount of time, but he insisted such measures would be the exception rather than the rule.
Mr Amann said Ormazabal was offering support to some of its suppliers: “We are trying to help them from the financial point of view as we are much stronger financially than most of them.”
He added that his company was in talks with its suppliers about the 50 per cent fall
in domestic sales it was expecting and the overall 35 per cent production cut it was planning.

Ormazabal and other electrical components companies were taking out insurance to protect themselves against suppliers getting into financial difficulties, he said.
Suppliers in other industries are also braced for pain with slumps of 20-40 per cent forecast for construction equipment and textile machine makers.
