Comets are made of ice, dust and small rocks.

Many people think that a comet's tail is always following behind it, but the tail can be behind the comet or in front of it. If a comet is traveling to the Sun, the tail will follow behind, but if the comet is traveling away from the Sun the tail will be in front of the comet.

The name comet comes from the Greek word meaning ‘hair of the head’, it came from the Greek philosopher Aristotle who observed comets as ‘stars with hair’.

Unfortunately, comets don't live very long. Just like a snowman melts in the summer, comets melt in the Solar System. After several thousand years they melt down to a little bit of ice and dust. Some even melt away completely.
