-Hello, my name is Elena Ivanova. I'm calling to find out about English courses. Can you help me?

-I think I can. Do you want to ask any questions?

-Yes, please. I'd like to know where the classes are going to be actually.

- There are two places. First of all you can come to the Central Library, we have some classes on the second floor there. Or we have classes in school № 1.

-I think that it is more convenient for me to come to school №1. Are the teachers the same in both places?

-Yes, they are. All our teachers are well qualified and experienced.

-Have they ever been to any English-speaking country?

-Most of our teachers have been teaching English for a long time and lived in Britain or the USA.

-Are all of them school teachers?

-There are some university teachers as well.

-Thank you very much. How long is it going to be?

-It depends on your level of English. We offer six levels, and each is about four months.

-How are you going to learn my level of English? Do I need to bring my school marks?

- No, you don't. We have special tests. When you start, you will take a computer test. According to the results of the test, you will be put on a certain level.

-Oh, I see, thank you. But I have another question. How much will I have to pay?

-It will depend on your studies and on your level. Every level costs about ten thousand roubles, but if you don't visit classes regularly, you may need to repeat a level, and to pay extra.

-That sounds quite reasonable, I think. Do you have all needed licenses?

-Yes, of course. We have a state license.

-Do you give any certificates?

-Yes, we give a certificate after you complete each level and pass the level test successfully.

-This suits me, I think. The last question, please. What documents do I need to bring to study at your courses?

-You will need a passport and two photos three by four. That's all. Come to school №1 from four till eight any working day and we'll see to it.

-Thank you very much. Good bye.

-Good bye!

-What are you going to do during this weekend?

-I don't really know much in your city, and I am absolutely free on Sunday. Is there anything interesting?

-It depends on what is interesting for you. What do you prefer?

-I'd like to see something specially Russian and to take some photos. You know something to write home about.

-Are you interesting in something modern or in historical monuments?

-I think history is more interesting. Do you have anything interesting?

-What would you say if we go to the Territory Museum?

- Oh, with great pleasure.

-There are many interesting ancient and historical things there. Many people come to see them. When I was in the seventh form, our teacher took us there. You can see national dresses of people who lived in Stavropol many years ago, their housekeeping objects and what not!

-That sounds good, but are there some other variants?

-We could also go to the art gallery. I think it will be very interesting for you to see the pictures of our famous Stavropol artist Grichishkin.

-Yes. It is great.

-Then we will go to another place, called Krepostnaya Gora. There you can see a wall of the castle, which was built in the time of Suvorov. There are also many monuments to famous Russian people in the centre of Stavropol: Pushkin, Lermontov, Lopatin and some others.

-But where do you like to go on weekends? Do you have special places?

-Yes of course! There are two big parks in Stavropol, where we like to spend our days off: the Central park and the Victory park. There are many caffees, attractions, quite places there.

- I’d like to go there in there evening.

-Well, let's put it like this. At first we will go to center to see Krepostnaya Gora and the monuments, than we will go to the Territory Museum and Art Gallery, and in the evening lets go to the Victory Park to rest and dance a little.

-Oh, I think we have a very interesting program.

-I think it is a good idea to go on a guided tour. But we must choose carefully. Do you have any ideas?

-I'd like something entertaining.

-OK, something light and entertaining. Would you like to see the attractive and remarkable places?

-Sure I'd like,

-Why not go to Arhiz? The tour starts at eight, and we'll be there at two. You could sleep in the bus.

-What can we see there?

-Oh, it is a unique place! You can see the beauty of Russian mountains there, take pictures and buy beautiful souvenirs including woolen hats and socks!

-Sounds interesting but it will take a lot of time to go there and back. Is there anything alike but closer?

-I think I know something you will like. It is the well-known Russian resort-Kislowodsk.

-What is Kislowodsk famous for?

-Oh, it’s a very beautiful city. It is famous for its mineral springs and picturesque places. You can see all of them and drink this water, which is useful for the health!

-Do they sell souvenirs?

-Oh, yes, of all kinds. And you can also choose a souvenir to all your friends and relatives. Isn't that interesting?

-I think I'd go there. And I also think we must take Sveta with us.

-I don't really think Sveta will go with us. You see, she takes her younger sister to the museum every Sunday. Maybe we should invite some of your friends. What about Stephen?

-Stephen is not going to enjoy it. He is so lazy. I think Kathy will be happy, she is interested in traveling.

-Oh, will you invite her?

-You'd better do it yourself.

-Ok, I'll call her now and invite to Kislovodsk on a guided tour.

-Agreed.

-Do you want me to write an article on environment protection?

-Yes, I think that now it is just the right time for such an article.

- How big should the article be?

-I think it should be not long, but stimulating. Protection of the environment is very important nowadays.

-But the size influences the amount of problems which I can discuss in the article.

-Well, I think one or two pages will be quite enough.

-I see. Then I think it is a good idea to discuss the question of packing and plastic bottles. Everyone feels it when buys food and drinks.

-It can be interesting. Do you see anything new in it?

-What I offer is to show that packages and plastic bottles can harm the air, the water and the earth, but it is very easy to get rid of them. There are trash bins everywhere. I want to finish my article with the thought that this something that everyone can do.

-I think everyone knows this.

-I also want to write about picnics. When we go to a picnic, we carry food and drinks with us, and then leave the packages on the ground. I don't think it is difficult to collect the plastic bags and bottles and take them to the trash bins. When you come to this place again, it will be nice and tidy. I think this can have some personal appeal.

-I agree.

-What I am not sure in is the title. I could think only of "Save the earth and help yourself”.

-Well, that's not a bad title. But I'm sure we can change it later if it is necessary.

-One more question, editor. When is the article due?

- I think, in two weeks will be perfect.

-I see. Then I shall have some time to search the Internet.

-Sure.

-Thank you for answering my questions.

-You are always welcome.

(Я) Journalist: -Hello, may I ask you a question?

Pupil: -Yes, of course.

J: -I work for the Children are the Future. It is a newspaper published in the United States. I happened to know that you got a grant. Can you comment on it?

P: -Oh, with great pleasure. We really got a grant from the local authorities.

J: -How did it happen?

P: -We took part in the contest "Our school is our home". According to the conditions, the class which was the friendliest and had the best classroom won. So we did everything we could. First of all we planned the way to make our class look more like home. Girls made curtains and brought nice flowers to put on window-sills. They also wash the floor regularly, and walls, too.

J: -And what about boys?

P: -Boys also had a lot to do. Boys painted the classroom and so divided it in halves - study zone and recreation zone. Boys also made different games, like domino and other table games. So during breaks we can play them. Oh yes, girls also made a game - a twister.

J: -It is an American game!

P: -Oh yes, we have read about it in a book and decided to have it. It is much fun.

J: -What else?

P: -We made some shelves and keep there some cookies and bring some tea or lemonade from home, so during the breaks we can have snacks. We have special napkins and tablecloths to protect the tables. They are very nice.

J: -Wow! Now I see that your classroom looks like a room in a family house.

P: -It does! And doing it we became friendlier. Some psychologists came and we took different tests. They say that the class is a real team.

J: -How much money have you got?

P: -Quite a sum - ten thousand roubles.

J: -What are you going to buy for the money?

P: -We had a hot discussion and decided to buy tents for camping. Every class will be able to use them and go on outings. This can help other forms become friendlier and have much fun.

J: -Thank you for answering my questions.

P: -You are welcome!

What country have you been to?

What cities did you visit?

Which city did you like the most?

What impressed you the most?

Did you eat any traditional food? What was it?

Did you see any historical monuments? What monuments did you see?

Did you see beautiful landscapes or seascapes?

What souvenirs have you brought?

What was the weather like?

Did you go on guided tours?

Is there anything alike in Russia? Why? What is the reason?

№7

- I'm sorry, can you help me?

-I hope I can. What's the matter?

-You see, I am lost. I'm from Russia, and we are here on a guided tour, but I can't find them now. I think it is best if I go back to the hotel, but I don't know how.

-What hotel do you live in?

-We are staying at the Ramada Inn, it is in Brook Street.

-It is far from here.

-How can I get there?

-Let me see... You should take bus number two.

-Could you tell me where the nearest bus stop is?

-Oh, sure. Let me think... you go straight ahead for two blocks, cross the street and then turn to the left. Make twenty steps, and here is the bus stop.

-Can I get to my hotel by underground?

-I don't think it is convenient, because you will have to take a bus or a taxi from the nearest underground stop. The bus is better because it goes along the street where your hotel is.

-Oh, I see, thank you. Do you happen to know how long the ride is going to be?

-Oh... about twenty minutes, I think. Tell the bus driver you need to goto Ramada Inn, and he'll tell you where to take off.

-Thank you very much. I'd like to give you this little souvenir. It is a traditional Russian doll matryoshka.

-Oh thank you very much.

-Good bye.

№8

- Sorry, can you help me?

-What can I do for you?

-You see, I want to buy some new clothes for summer, but I'm not sure what to buy. Can you advise me anything?

-Let me see... Is your summer hot?

-Well, quite. But there are cold days as well.

-Then I think light jeans will do very well. We have just got new ones. They are very fashionable now. Or you can choose knee-high jeans.

-Can I have a look at them?

-Yes, sure. Here you are.

-But I don't know my size.

-Oh, I can say your size is 12 or 13.

-I'm yet not sure. May I try them on?

-Which would you like to try on? Jeans or knee-high ones?

-Both, I think. Do the knee-high jeans suit me?

-They sit perfectly, if you want my opinion. And they are good for both hot and cool weather.

-How much are they?

- These are 15 dollars.

-That suits me, I'll take them. Where shall I pay?

-Over there, at the cashier desk. How would you like to pay?

- By credit card.

-I'll pack them for you while you are paying.

-Thank you.

№9

-Anna Ivanovna, I'm going to give a talk on an English-speaking country. I'm not sure what country I should take. There is much material about Britain, but I don't think it is interesting. I feel it will be better if I speak about New Zealand. We know so little about it.

-I think you are right. It can be really interesting. What are you going to speak about?

-I'm going to start with its history and colonization by the British. Should I also mention its flora and fauna?

-Yes, they are very interesting.

-I also want to speak about the present day of New Zealand and its industries.

-Where are you going to get material?

-I'm going to search the Internet, and I also have a few books on the topic. Do you think I shall be able to show some slides if I find them in the Internet?

-I think you'll be able. It will add interest to your talk.

-Anna Ivanovna, can you also advise me some methods to prepare the talk?

-You can visit the school library or the local library. You'll be able to find books and photos there.

-How much time will I have?

-I think about fifteen minutes will be all right.

-Oh, yes.

№10

(Я)- Hello, …..! I'm calling to greet you. You know I'm coming to your city in two days.

-Hello, Jackie! I'm glad to hear you. It's great you are coming.

-Could you meet me in the airport?

-Sure I can. When exactly?

-The plane arrives at four o'clock, but I'll call you in case of the delay. And of course it will take me some time to pass all controls.

-So I'll see you at about a quarter past four. But anyway I'll arrive at four just in case.

-That'll be perfect.

-What is your flight number?

-It is 789, London.

-I'm putting it down: 798, London. Four o'clock.

-It’s correct.

-I'll be at the arrival gate. Where do you want to go?

-I'm eager to see the theatre and the central part of your city and the Victory Park.

-Do you want to see anything else?

-Nothing in particular, but I want to walk about your city.

-OK. On the day of your arrival I'll take you for a walk, and the next day we'll go to the theatre. Will that do?

-Oh, sure. See you the day after tomorrow, then. Bye.

-See you.
