Eat to maintain proper digestive function.

Eat to maintain proper blood sugar regulation.

Follow a plan that will help you reach your own personal health goals.

No more rice and beans. No more bread, pasta, or cereal. These are all cheap foods, and rightfully so since they provide little nutritional value when you compare them to vegetables, meats, fruits, nuts, seeds, and quality fats and oils.

While much of the store is filled with items you could—and likely used to—buy, your mission now will be entirely different. Seek out as much whole food as possible. This means foods without health claims on the packages or, better yet, not even in packages. Instead, buy produce, butcher-counter meats, and seafood.

at the grocery store: walk the perimeter

If you are currently eating foods primarily from the center aisles of the grocery store, you are most likely purchasing refined, processed food. Instead, I suggest shopping the perimeter of the store. This is where you’ll find produce, meat, seafood, and eggs. (It’s also where you’ll find the bakery, but avoid the bakery!) The outside sections of the store are where you’ll find most fresh foods because it’s where the store can easily supply power to the displays to keep food cool, damp, and unspoiled. Real food does not have a long shelf life and should spoil within a couple of weeks at most (except for frozen vegetables or meats).

Round out your grocery trip by cruising down just a few of the inner aisles. These can be useful for stocking up on items like cooking fats and oils, vinegars, mustards, “clean” sauces, spices, and selected canned or jarred items.
