Offline map Google map (Yìduōruìzhàn; 101-107 Nanshan Lu; 101-107 9am-2am) A fab location by West Lake, roof terrace aloft, strong menu and a sure-fire atmosphere conspire to make this welcoming watering hole a great choice. There’s sports TV, live music, a ground-floor terrace, a good range of beers, and barbecues fire up on the roof terrace in the warmer months. It’s right by the Mingtown Youth Hostel.

Sūzhōu

Explore

Famed for its gardens, canals and silk production, Sūzhōu is a pleasant, if way overhyped, Jiāngsū canal town. If you don’t go expecting an impeccable portrait of traditional China but a melange of modern town planning embedded with picturesque chunks of history, Sūzhōu is a rewarding diversion from Shànghai, especially for its traditional walled gardens, excellent museums, riveting temples and charming canal-side streets.

The delightful gardens (yuánlín) of Sūzhōu were generally small, private compounds attached to family residences and, in principle at least, they were designed to help achieve the intellectual ideal of balancing Confucian social duties (in the city) with Taoism’s worldly retreat (in nature).

Unless stated otherwise, the gardens listed here are open from 7.30am to 5.30pm during high season (March to mid-November) but close at 5pm in winter. Peak prices are from mid-April to October.
