LEADERSHIP

Leadership is both a characteristic (property) and the process

Leadership is a social process of cooperation of the head of the group and the members of the group which is oriented to the reaching of the common goals,

purpose, objectives.

Since ancient times leadership has been the point of investigation. It was considered as:

- The unique ability given from the birth (under the rights of the birth);

- The trained ability of the best people of the society;

- Psychological characteristics of people;

- The function of the group;

- The means to rule the crowd;

- The tools to achieve the common goals.

Leader is a person who has the skills, abilities and characteristics with the help of which he influences on the group with the means of force and motivation.

 

Theories of leadership

Trait theories

◦ Are such characteristics
inherently gender biased?

◦ Do such characteristics
produce good leaders?

Behavioural:

— Imply that leaders can be trained – focus on the way of doing things

Contingency Theories:

— Leadership as being more flexible – different leadership styles used at different times depending on the circumstance.

Structure of leadership skills of a person is based on the peculiaritiesof his professional activities. Specific of the future work of economists is considered as the sum of economic oriented types of activities connected with planning, arranging, management, evaluation of work, cooperation and motivation of the team members.

Leadership skills

1. the ability to create a vision of the desired state

4 efficiency of persuasive speaking and listening

5 quick decision-making

6 putting skill tasks and organizing work

 

Behavior of leaders

 

Autocratic:

◦ Leader makes decisions without reference to anyone else

Democratic:

— Encourages decision making
from different perspectives – leadership may be emphasised throughout
the organisation

Paternalistic:

— Leader acts as a ‘father figure’

— Paternalistic leader makes decision but may consult

Laissez-Faire: ‘Let it be’ – the leadership responsibilities
are shared by all.

Change leadership is t he most challenging aspect of business is leading and managing change. The business environment is subject to fast-paced economic and social change.
