Group Critiques

Where possible these take place in a designated space away from the clutter of your studio space. It provides the opportunity to reflect upon current work and that of your peers in a clean environment where it can be easier to be more objective. The group critique is most successful when everyone contributes and offers considered feedback on the work displayed. The tutor will guide the session, but it is important that everyone contributes. Feedback (formative peer assessment) is a very valuable method of learning that can often continue more informally in the studio environment. A group crit offers you a range of opinions about how your work is received, it can reveal new possibilities not previously considered, and can help you to view your work more objectively. Remember your comments and opinions are as valuable as anyone’s.

Terms explained:

Active Learning

Participating in the learning process through reflecting, reviewing, questioning, discussing, making decisions, or testing out creative or intellectual propositions.

Criticality

This really means asking questions and being curious, analytical and objective. You may find this experience challenging but this should be viewed as a constructive way of developing thinking skills that will support your creative practice. A ‘critical’ approach should be understood as a method of learning and not a negative experience to be endured. “Criticism” doesn’t mean you are doing something “wrong”, it provides different perspectives for you to consider and should help you to broaden your understanding.

Formative Assessment

Formative assessment provides feedback about how you are doing and what you are achieving while the work is still in progress. It allows you to respond to ideas and suggestions made before the body of work is summatively assessed. Summative Assessment is the ‘summation’ of achievement over a semester of study.

Peer Assessment

This may occur through informal dialogue with colleagues in the studio environment. Peer assessment is also embedded in all the core studio modules and specifically occurs in the context of the group critique. Contributing and receiving thoughts and ideas about on-going work can assist the learning process.

Reflective practice

Reflective practice lies at the heart of the learning process in the fine arts. Being able to reflect appropriately on learning is fundamental to individual progress. Becoming an active and reflective learner assists your ability to self-evaluate, review progress and consider new goals and to become an independent and successful practitioner. The ability to reflect on and in practice should deepen as you progress through the course.

Self-Assessment (Self-Evaluation)

Reflecting on and reviewing what you are doing or what you have done. Asking yourself questions and making observations and decisions about strengths and weaknesses. Acting upon this.
