Introduction In 1946 antifascists built the recreation place “Heideruh” for victims of the Nazi regime and children who had been liberated from the concentration camps of Bergen-Belsen and Neuengamme. After gruesome years of fascist dictatorship relatives, survivors and friends created a place amidst woodland in innumerable hours of voluntary work and sacrifice. There they could regain power for their work comitted to achieve a more just society. Until today Heideruh has primarily served as a recreation centre and place of encounter for antifascists – since 1989 for antifascists from the East and West.

Type of Work: Constructing a path for barefoot walking, extending a playground and a room for teens, documentation of the workcamp, researching literature, conducting interviews, partly organised by the Auschwitz committee.

The aim is to prepare for the time when witnesses of fascist terror will not be available anymore. During the last four days of the camp the group will encounter young German antifascists. A variety of workshops will be offered.

Study Theme: meeting witnesses, visiting Bergen-Belsen memorial site and various other memorial sites in Hamburg

Accommodation: in Heideruh, in single and double rooms. There is also a campsite.

Language: English

Requirements: An interest in the topic of antifascism, acting respectfully towards elderly, being interested in manageable building projects and construction of ideas.

Notes: During daytime we offer warm beverages and water. Other beverages have to be paid for.

DE-SCI 1.34 GEORGSMARIENHUETTE (near Osnabrueck)

Introduction During World War II more than 2000 persons from 17 countries were kept as prisoners in this concentration camp set up by the Gestapo. The main group of prisoners were forced laborers who came from the Netherlands and the former Soviet Union. Their punishment also used to serve as a deterrent to more than 25000 other women, men and children who were forced to compulsory labor in the Osnabrueck region. Almost half of them came from the Ukraine, Belarus and Russia. The memorial and reaseach site displays the history of forced labour and national socialism in the region of Osnabrueck.

Type of Work: Help with the excavation of the former camp territory. The volunteers of this camp will support the construction of the memorial site and learn more about the history of WWII and its consequences for Russian and German people.

Study Theme: Change of perspective: Russians and Germans during WWII, forced labor, commemoration culture in the two countries, the Gestapo camp Ohrbeck, current problems with fascism, anti-Semitism and racism in Germany and Russia, meeting of two cultures.

Accommodation: In a house of the German Red Cross (Local group Holzhausen).

Language: English.

Requirements: Volunteers must be broad-minded, open for new perspectives, interested in the topic and intercultural encounters. A few places are available for international vols.

DE-SCI 6.52 Glücksburg I (Schleswig-Holstein, near Flensburg)

Introduction The artefact centre, which is located in Gluecksburg/Baltic Sea (close to the German-Danish border), is a centre for sustainable development. This non-profit organisation runs a guesthouse built in an organic style of architecture with a renewable energy supply. The ‘Powerpark’, an energy infotainment site for tourists, conducts project activities for young people as well as specialist seminars for adults on renewable energy, building and water management. In order to keep up its attractiveness as a destination for training and tourism, installations on the site need to be improved.

Type of Work: Building new infotainment stations and maintenance work in the energy and experience park, the repair shop and the housing area, possibly building a solar kitchen

Study Theme: Getting to know the causes and effects of climate change and the different options for renewable and peaceful energy sources for different climates

Accommodation: In tents, compost toilets and solar shower facilities nearby. Cooking together with the group.

Requirements: Interest in the topic ‘renewable energies’ will be expected, manual skills preferable

Notes: Trips to Glücksburg´s famous castle, the city and port of Flensburg, Baltic and North sea coast, Denmark possible; please bring along warm sleeping bag, a camping mat and waterproof work clothes.
