DE-SCI 6.40 Bernkastel-Kues I (about 40 km east of Trier)

Start Date: 2012-07-14, End Date: 2012-07-29
Number of volunteers: 12, Topic: 6: Environment
International age: 18 - 99
National age: 16 - 99

Introduction In the age of climate change and global injustice, we ask ourselves if we have to change our consumption-oriented and resource-wasting lifestyle. A person who practices a consistently natural life is Friedmunt Sonnemann. He cultivates plants which are threatened or endangered and sells the seeds to various garden plot holders.

Type of Work: Depending on the weather conditions: working in the fields, building a constructed wetland for waste water treatment or construction of the house with simple materials (loam and straw). You will work on Saturday mornings, too!

Study Theme: Botany, discussion about the extinction of rare crops

Accommodation: In the barn, kitchen available, compost toilet. Living room, spring water and telephone are available. Only vegetarian food.

Requirements: Ability to adapt basic conditions and endure this life style for two weeks. (The hut has neither a water pipe nor electricity, and the road to it is not paved)

Approximate Location: 4 hectares of land, situated in a forest near the small wine and tourist town of Bernkastel-Kues. Life in this remote area (it is one-hour walk uphill from the village) is not suitable for everyone, so the volunteers must be able to adapt to simple living conditions, live an organic lifestyle and be willing to avoid waste.

Notes: Do not bring a mobile telephone because of its unhealthy effect. Because of the high economical demands of the property, it’s required that the volunteers work also Saturday mornings. No internet
