Best fit on points alignment enables the part to align to the CAD data using three or more points for which you know the CAD nominals.

PowerINSPECT then uses these points that have been probed as geometric elements to carry out a 'best fit' to the rest of the CAD data around the nominals.

In this example we are using the Speaker. The CAD file for this part is Speaker.odx.

We will create the alignment using the centre point of two circles and a slot.

The first step is to probe the required geometry.

Once probed, we can create the alignment.

Move up the levels until Geometric Group 1 is Closed.

From the Alignments Sub-Menu icon , in the Element Toolbar:

Choose the Best Fit From Points Alignment icon .

The Best Fit From Points alignment dialog box appears.

Point 1/3 is displayed. You must define the first point you want to use.

Select the first geometric element point you want to use in this best fit, from the drop-down list box. This can be a point from any element you have already set up, for example the centre of a probed feature.

Type the coordinates in the CAD data for the first point in the X,Y and Z boxes.

Alternatively, if you have selected the geometry from the CAD using the Geometry Explorer, click the button to copy the points nominal coordinates.

You can make the first point a Hard Point by clicking on the check box. This means that PowerINSPECT will match the geometric point to the CAD nominal exactly rather than trying to 'best fit' it with the other features.

Click to move to display Point 2/3, select the second point you want to use from the drop down list and click .

Click to move to display Point 3/3, select the third point you want to use from the drop down list and click .

If you want to use more than three points, click to create a new point, which will be displayed as Point 4/4.

You can add as many points as you think necessary for the Best Fit, and for which you have set up a geometric element and know the nominal co-ordinates.

To move to the previous point click on and click on to move to the next point.

To delete unwanted points, click . This deletes the currently displayed point.

You cannot however be left with any fewer than the minimum of three points.

Click OK to align the part to the CAD.
