    1. Children often fantasize about what they want to be when they grow up and often want to be just like their parents. But such ambitions often reflect more fantasy than reality. Michaels’ father was a judge. He strongly encouraged Michael to choose the law because it was a “good profession”. Although he practiced for 7 years, Michael never really enjoyed his career. Michael was surprised to discover that his father did not enjoy law either. By “good profession” he had meant that Michael could make money and be a professional.

Once the rules changed, women began to capture their new rights in law. Law quickly replaced teaching as the new gold standard for women. The new formula for happiness and success seemed to be: law degree plus high-powered career plus cleverness means respect.

My profession.

I study at Omsk, State University. It is one of the youngest but the most popular universities in Omsk. It was founded in 1974. At present the University has got 14 faculties. I am a first-year student of Law Faculty.

The object of studies in our faculty is law. According to the curriculum law students study many theoretical subjects and have practical classes. A lawyer must be a broadly educated person. So we study Philosophy, History, Foreign languages. We also have many special subjects – Theory and History of State and Law, Roman Law, Civil law and Procedure, Criminal law and procedure, Family law, Criminalistics, Employment (Labour) Law, and others.

Classes usually begin at 8 am, we have 6-8 hours of studies a day. We attend lectures and seminars. After the classes are over some students go to the library where they can find a lot of necessary books and journals to prepare their home assignments and sit for exams.

Law students have an opportunity to join different scientific societies at the faculty and do research work, discuss problems at students’ scientific conferences, write articles and reports. We can also have practical work in procurator’s office and investigating departments, we can attend court trials and see how criminal justice is carried out.

In future we can work in different law offices and companies, Procurator’s office, Notary offices, the Bar, Home Affairs Ministry, Law Enforcement departments, courts and so on. Graduates from Law faculty can work as judges, investigators, notaries, prosecutors, barristers and other legal specialists.

The activity of lawyers in our country is aimed at regulating people’s relations, their attitude to state and society according to law and human morality. The work of every legal specialist is quite responsible. Each of us needs a high educational level and good professional training. A lawyer must be honest, truthful, clever and have high moral qualities because lawyers stand on guard of the interests of the state, the rights and interests of citizens and public order.
