Case Study “Information Technologies in Business”

Undertake an investigation into the kinds of information processing systems used in a business organisation that you know. (This could be your school or college, work placement, or any other organisation). Alternatively choose a type of business (e.g. a small factory) and suggest the kinds of information processing systems that would be required for its efficient operation.

1. Describe the information processing systems in use in the business (both computerised and manual) and the purpose of these systems.

2. Evaluate the scope (if any) for further computerisation of information processing systems in the organisation.

3. Suggest how the effectiveness of the information processing systems in use may be measured, and attempt to evaluate the effectiveness of the systems for your organisation. (This section of your report should lead to an identification of strengths and weaknesses in the systems.)

4. Report on the positive and negative effects brought about in the organisation because of the introduction of new technology. You should indicate what further changes are likely to occur in future and also include an evaluation of how well the organisation has handled some of the major changes so far.

5. What is the purpose of the Data Protection Act, and how does the organisation ensure it complies with it? (If possible, include a record of a recent breach of the act.)

Make a verbal presentation of your report to the rest of your group. This presentation should emphasise the lessons to be learned for organisations in general from your investigation. You should also prepare a detailed written report to hand in, covering the above points.
