OUR INSTITUTE

The Omsk Veterinary Training Institute was first established over 80 years ago, in 1920, and during that time has demonstrated high class of it’s specialists.Its achievements in the years after the Second World War have been especially impressive. It has been one of a small number of Institutes which pioneered the development of veterinary science.

It has developed a wide range of courses serving the needs of particular professions from veterinary doctors to teachers, scientists, various experts.

The Omsk Veterinary Institute attracts students not only from all over the Omsk region, but from the wider international community.

Today there are approximatelly 3000 full-time and part time students in the Institute. Nearly 200 members of the full-time academic staff and part-time and visiting lecturers serve students of the Institute.

Location. The Institute is situated in one of the pleasant central parts of Omsk. All kinds of transport can help you to get to the Institute.

History. The first veterinary faculty in Omsk was organized in autumn 1918 on the base of the Omsk Agricultural Institute which was founded in February 1918.

In 1920 it was transformed into the Omsk Veterinary Training Institute with two faculties: a veterinary and a medical.

In 1922 the Omsk Vet. Institute was again transformed into a Veterinary-Zootechnical Institute and in 1936-into the Omsk Vet. Training Institute.

The founders and creators of our Institute were famous Soviet scientists, representatives of the Kazan Vet. Institute and among them professors K.P.Victorov, L.B.Sapozhnikov, L.A.Fadeev, A.J.Akaevsky and others.

An important event in the history of our Institute was the visit of A.V. Lunacharsky, the peoples’ commissar of education in 1928. Many well-known scientists contributed to the development of our Institute.

The academic year is divided into two terms. The first term /autumn, fall/ usually begins on the 1st of September and lasts for 18 weeks. The second term /spring/ begins in February and lasts for 18 weeks too. Veterinary studies last for 5 years or 10 academic terms.

The veterinary curriculum includes many subjects. The first year students study such subjects as History of Russia, Physics, Chemistry, Botany, Zoology, Anatomy of the domestic animals and others. In the second year the curriculum includes some additional subjects such as Microbiology, Nutrition, Live-stock Breeding. Clinical training begins in the third year. In the third and the fourth year of study the students spend several months on production work. At the end of each term the students take examination and credit-tests. After the completion of the whole course there are the final State examinations for the degree of veterinary doctor.
