19. The reasons and consequences of cheating. In addition, some students cheat because they fail to take certain subjects or courses seriously, or else they decide certain courses matter less than others. To meet requirements, one must take courses in one's weaker or less familiar subjects. Sometimes, students look for short cuts in these classes, since they are outside one's major and thus seem to matter less. In my case, my major is electrical engineering, a demanding and sometimes overwhelming subject. Students cheat to survive. The pressure to excel in school means those who are not prepared and those who are not proficient in certain subjects, believe cheating is the only solution. Some students are lazy, but not all students are lazy. Some students have needed intervention for years, but the system keeps passing them on without them getting the help they really need. After all, what 6th grade teacher really wants a 15 year old in his or her classroom along with twelve year olds? Students cheat because consequences are insignificant. Why are they insignificant? Many teachers want to avoid a conflict or power struggle. Many teachers want disruptive students to succeed, so they don't get them back next quarter. Many teachers want job security, and that means "Johnny" must pass their class. Johnny, the school board member's kid, Johnny, the star football player, must make the grade. If that means teacher must be more merciful than disciplinary, cheating will happen in the classroom.

If a student knows he or she will receive only a warning for cheating, he or she will probably take the chance, because the benefit of cheating appears to outweigh the consequences of getting caught. But there is a bigger picture regarding student cheating, and it's this. Unless stiffer consequences are maintained and felt, cheating will work its way through any classroom and on into society.

Plagiarism in education. Plagiarism is an act of academic dishonesty in which a person takes the work or ideas of others and presents them as his own without proper credit or attribution. Most schools, especially universities and colleges, communicate their policies to students, warning of consequences. Plagiarism has many effects on education---not only on students and scholars who commit the offense but on the educational environment as a whole. Plagiarism in academia is in the news every day. The mere thought of plagiarism makes Thai students and instructors very nervous. English language teachers are especially concerned with the issue. However, there is a fundamental flaw in applying strict US and UK standards to English-language students in this part of the world. Educational institutions, especially colleges and universities, regard plagiarism as a serious breach of academic honesty and integrity. They warn their students of serious consequences for plagiarizing the work of others. Students who are guilty of plagiarism face at the least a failing grade in the course for which they committed the offense. Other possible consequences include suspension or even expulsion from the school they attend. Plagiarism poisons the relationship between students and teachers by undermining the mutual trust that is an important element of the learning process. Widespread incidents of plagiarism, such as students taking work from the Internet and presenting it as their own, force teachers to act as police investigators, constantly searching for wrongdoing. All students become suspect in such an environment, and learning becomes impossible. Suspicion and mistrust replace intellectual curiosity and trust. Plagiarism also damages relationships between students who plagiarize and those who earn their grades honestly.
