Here is the vocabulary list to prepare for the discussion. Most of the words mentioned will be very helpful indeed. You can find some useful links on the topic below. We would strongly recommend you to print the copy in order to be able to use the words during the discussion.

Protest Vocabulary List

 

Boycott – (verb.) to remove yourself from commercial or socials relations with a country, organization or person as a punishment or protest - бойкотировать

 

Ex. “Sergei Mironov, the leader of the opposition Just Russia party, said his faction was boycotting the hearings of the "odious" bill intended to "shut the people's mouth."

 

Charges – (noun) an accusation, mostly referring to a crime that a prisoner did before being arrested - обвинения

 

Crack down on – (verb) to take severe measures or actions against something. – принимать решительные(жестокие меры)

 

Ex. Police cracked down on protesters in an anti-Putin rally in Moscow on May 6th.

 

Demonstration – (noun) a public meeting or march protesting against something or expressing views on a political issue. - демонстрация

 

Demonstrator – (noun) a person who attends a demonstration. - демонстрант

 

To Detain – (verb) to arrest someone and hold them for questioning about a crime or political situation - задержать

 

Detention – (noun) the action of being detained or held in custody. - задержание

 

Dissent – (noun) an opinion that goes against what is commonly accepted or thought - несогласие

 

Donation – (noun) money that is given for free to support a cause, such as a political rally - пожертвования

 

Donate – (verb) to give money to support a cause or point of view – жертвовать ден.средства

 

Draconian – (adj.) excessively harsh and severe - суровый

 

Ex. “President Vladimir Putin targeted those who dare oppose him Tuesday, introducing draconian new fines for protesters...”

 

Incite – (verb) to encourage – провоцировать, подстрекать

 

Ex. Some accusations suggest that Navalny was inciting violence toward police while protesting.

 

Faction – (noun) a small, organized group with a different view than the main or larger group, often in politics. - фракция

 

March – (verb) walk along public roads in an organized group in order to protest something

- (noun) a walking protest or demonstration - марш

 

Opposition – (noun) a group of individuals against the status quo or current establishment

- (adj.) used to describe an idea or body of individuals against the current establishment

Ex. Opposition Movement

 

Rally – (noun) a political meeting or protest designed to create energy for a cause - митинг

 

Sanctioned – (adj.) to be allowed and approved by a higher authority or government - санкционированный

 

Sentence – (noun) the period of time a person must spend in jail for breaking a law - приговор

 

Unsanctioned – (adj.) not approved by a higher authority or government - несанкционированный
