Let’s talk about different types of houses. Describe your place.

There are four basic types of housing: detached houses, semi-detached houses, terraced houses and flats. The most popular type of home in England is semi-detached (more than 27% of all homes), closely followed by detached then terraced. In Belarus I think most people in the cities and towns live in the blocks of flats, in the country detached houses are most popular.

A semi-detached house is a pair of houses that share one common wall. The two houses are built to mirror each other. Interestingly enough, this type of housing is called a duplex in other parts of the world. Some of the detached houses are cottages and bungalows. Terraced housing is also known as townhouses. A row of identical looking houses share side walls. Now you can find them not far from Minsk.

I live in a block of flats. It is made of bricks and tiles. In my flat there are three rooms We have central heatingwithradiatorsin each room which keep our flat warm.

If you come into my flat, you will find yourself in the hall.

In the kitchen we have lots of cupboards and an electric/gas cooker, a fridge (refrigerator) and a freezer. Our microwave is very quick and easy to use. We wash our things in the washing machine/We wash up the plates in the sink as we don’t have a dishwasher.

There is also a lounge. Some people call this room the living-room. In our lounge there is atable with chairs, a settee(in America I think they call this a sofa - it is a comfy 2-seater chair), two comfy chairs, a television, a DVD Player. We also have satellite/cable TV. There are some cupboards and a bookcase.

In my bathroom there is a toilet, a bath, a sinkwith two taps (one for hot water and one for cold), a showerand a laundry basket. This is where we put our dirty clothes for washing.

Do you find your room a comfortable place for living?

I live by the motto ‘My bedroom is my castle’. My bedroom is a place where I can relax and be comfortable and I think, that is why it is important to me.

I have some sorts of silly items to decorate my room. There are posters as tall as you stand, a bumping stereo that all give my room its unique style. Although my room is very small, it easily holds all the stuff I need to relax and feel right at home. I must mention my computer. I do lots of things on it: surf the Internet, chat with my mates and listen to music. With its four separate speakers it provides perfect surround sound. The system sounds great at volume. There are several cacti on my computer desk. I also have a wardrobe - to hang clothes in, cupboards for all other stuff like old toys etc. There is also a bookcase / bookshelves for my books and my bed. My room is my haven. I have everything I could need in it. Many have complimented me on my lighting effects and on my choice of colours. I look forward to the day when I move into my own house. There, my room will be more than twice as large as it is now. Who knows what I’ll do then…

Ask me what my flat/ house look like.

Are the rooms cluttered or tidy? Is your room spacious?

What is there on the walls of your room?

What furniture do you have in your house/flat?

What makes your flat/house special?

Do you think your bedroom is your haven or just a place where you sleep?

How have you changed your home since you've started living there?

Is your house spacious enough?

Do you have all modern conveniences in your house?

Do you think your home lacks charm and warmth?
