Business protocol. The business breakfast, lunch and dinner. Seating.

Problem setting:

1. Study the popular seating arrangement at home or in a restaurant and say whether it is the same way to let the guests sit in your country? Does everyone follow the custom to place the guests at the table? Where the host and the hostess should be seated? What about the most honored guests? Describe the scheme below.

maleguest co-host guest female   honored honored   Guestguest host guest Guest

2. Read the rules of seating proper to the most European countries and decide whether you always follow these rules. Which of the instructions differ dramatically from the rules proper to your region?

Seating etiquette in a restaurant is just as important as dining etiquette. Restaurants are the settings for meetings with clients, dates and meals with loved ones. The more familiar you are with restaurant seating etiquette, the more likely you are to make a positive impression.

1. Wait for instructions on where to sit. The host will either lead you to a table or inform you that you can sit where you like.

2. When dining with a female, it is proper etiquette for the woman to follow the host while the man follows her. When leaving the table, the male also should follow the female.

3. When approaching the table with a male dining companion, the woman should choose where she wants to sit. When dining with other women, it is anyone's choice.

4. The male dining companion should pull out the chair for the female when she is getting ready to sit down. As she sits and moves closer to the table, the male should help her push the chair in.

5. When getting up from the table, check to see how much distance you have from the person behind you. Push back the chair carefully as you stand up to avoid hitting anyone.

Text: Seating and table manners.

When you enter a restaurant first, check your overcoat and briefcase. Keep with you any materials you may want to present during your meeting. See if there are coat hooks or self service coat rack somewhere in the restaurant. If there is no one responsible for these self service situations, take any valuables (coat included) along with you to your seat.

If a reservation is made, it is polite to wait until your entire party arrives to be seated. This is because waiters do not make any money if you are sitting at a table awaiting other guests. The host will lead the way for a woman who will then have her seat pulled out for her.

If you have to spread out papers at a meeting with just one other person, you still might want a table for four, rather than for two. And then you may have good reasons for wanting the other person to sit at your right, rather than across from you vice versa.

At a business dinner it is customary to separate spouses in the seating arrangement- whether by putting other people between them at one table, or by seating them at separate tables if there are two or more tables. This allows married couples to converse easily with others.Unless there is a very good reason to take objection to this practice.

At any type of business meeting, your table manners are easily scrutinized. You are there for business first, not to eat. Don’t order things you love but that are real messy things and you have to concentrate to get them from the plate to your mouth. Stick with familiar foods and eat slowly, since that is polite; it also indicates you are confident, reserved and in control of yourself and your food.

Smoking is tolerated but should not be done at the table. A smoker should ask to be excused at an opportune time and smoking should be done at designated smoking areas or in the outside open air. A smoker has to ask: “Do you mind if I smoke?” It is nicer to make sure that everyone at the table is in agreement. If one of the guests minds, the host will try to voice objections in a neutral way, placing the blame on a medical problem rather than on the smoker’s offensive habit. If the smoker is the guest of honor, you may decide to let him smoke without such comments (“ Would you mind smoking on the terrace as I am allergic to smoke?”) or other restrictions.

The meal is the excuse behind the business that is to be conducted, so try to stick to business. If you do talk about something else, make it interesting conversation rather than personal matters.

Although the formal, written thank –you note may be more commonly associated with more elaborate executive entertaining, saying at least thank you after the event is important for the business breakfast, lunch or dinner as well.

A failure to send “thank you” notes is one of the most overlooked aspects of business etiquette.

Now, read the table manners for children. Are they the same as for adultsJ? Did you follow those rules while being a child?

to say grace — возносить, приносить молитвы

1. Wash your hands before sitting down. 2. Leave toys, books, and pets behind. 3. When you sit down, place the napkin in your lap. 4. Sit up straight and don't slouch. 5. Ask politely for dishes to be passed.

6. Never reach across the table. 7. Wait until everyone is seated and served before starting to eat. 8. If grace is said, wait to eat until it is completed. 9. Don't giggle during grace. 10. Keep your elbows off table. 11. Never chew with your mouth open. 12. Never talk with a mouth full of food. 13. Use utensils quietly without banging them on the table or plate. 14. You should place your knife softly on the edge of the plate when not in use. 15. Slice butter from the butter dish and place it on your butter plate or other plate. 16. The butter knife should stay with the butter dish. 17. Never wave or throw utensils. 18. Keep your knife out of your mouth. 19. Never play with your food. 20. Never grab food from other people's plates. 21. Ask politely for seconds if you want them. 22. Ask to be excused from the table. 23. Clear your plate from the table and take it into the kitchen. 24. Remember, good manners are important and make meals more enjoyable. 25. You will be proud if you learn these rules at home. 26. Then when you go out to eat, they will be habit.

Now, ask each other questions, using the structure: “1.Did you ever wash hands before sitting down at table when you were small?” Take your turn and do the communication activity quickly, using all the sentences from “Table manners for children”.
