My studying at Izhevsk State Technical University

Nowadays there are many higher educational institutions in Izhevsk. But the most popular one is Izhevsk State Technical University. Our University was founded on the first of January, 1953 by the order of Stalin.

There are 15 faculties in our University. They are: the Faculty of Philology, Law, Psychology, History, Physical Culture and Sport and so on. As I am a first year student of the Faculty of Physical Culture and Sport I would like to tell you a few words about my faculty. It was founded in 1990. Our students get knowledge in physical culture, anatomy, chemistry, physiology, psychology, foreign languages and so on. Our faculty has 4 gyms, many classrooms, a swimming pool, a library.

There are 3 departments at the University: a day-time department, a correspondence department and a post-graduate department.

Our University has some traditions such as the Days of the faculty, Art Festival "Students Spring" and so on. Every year the University organizes Students Scientific Conference and the students take an active part in the work of the Conference. They have an opportunity to demonstrate the knowledge they get at the University and to win some awards.

The course of studies lasts 5 years. The academic year begins on the first of September and ends in June. The academic year is divided into 2 terms. At the end of each term the students take tests and exams and after that they have holidays.

The students who make good progress in studies get a monthly scholarship. During the term students have to attend lectures, classes and seminars. In case of having some problems students may go to the Dean and solve them. As a rule the students are divided into groups consisting of 25 people. At the beginning of the academic year the Dean of the faculty appoints heads of the groups who are called monitors. They are in charge of studies, attendance of classes and discipline in the group.

The University students have at their disposal all necessary facilities: well-equipped laboratories, a large new library, museums, gyms, snack-bars and canteens.

Our country requires more and more specialists with higher education. The main task of our University is to prepare young specialists for schools, institutions, industry and science.

Ex.10 Read the text about Britain's Victorian times schools. Do you think old Russian schools were the same? What do you know about them?

In Britain's Victorian times schools were brutal. If you misbehaved, teachers tied a big piece of wood, across your shoulders or you could be put in stocks. Classes had over 70 pupils in them. Parents hated sending their children to school because it meant the children couldn't go out to work. In 1870 school cost a penny a day. In 1891 education became free.

Oxbridge life at college and university

There are 46 universities in Britain. The academic year in Britain's universities, Polytechnics, Colleges of Education is divided into three terms, which usually run from the beginning of October to the middle of December, from the middle of January to the end of March, and from the middle of April to the end of June or the beginning of July.

The oldest and best-known universities are locater in Oxford and Cambridge, which are called the "intellectual eyes" of Britain. They are often collectively called Oxbridge to denote an elitarian education. Only very rich and aristocratic families can afford to send their sons and daughters to these universities. Mostly they are public school leavers.

The Oxford University was established in 1249 but the first mention of it goes back to 1213. The name Oxford means the part of the river Thames where oxen forded it. Oxford is international because people from many parts of the world come to study there. They study at twenty four men's colleges or at five women's colleges or at another five where both men and women study together. Among the oldest colleges are University college, all Souls and Christ Church. One can see the charm of Oxford in the green fields and parks which surround the city and you can see it in the green lawns and gardens which surround the colleges. The local car industry gives an important addition to the town's outlook. There is a great deal of bicycle traffic both in Oxford and Cambridge.

Cambridge starter during the 13th and grew until today. Now there are more than thirty colleges. Almost all colleges are now mixed. They line along the right bank of the Cam river. One can enjoy picturesque scenery of willow trees weeping their branches into the water. The most famous college is probably King's College because of its magnificent chapel, the most beautiful building in Cambridge, a piece of English fifteen-century architecture. Its choir of boys and undergraduates is also very well known. Many great men studied in Cambridge. You might have heard such names as Roger Bacon, the philosopher, Milton, the poet ling Cromvell, the soldier, Newton, the scientist, Kapitza, the famous Russian physicist.

The normal length of the degree course is three years after which the students take the Degree of Bachelor of Arts (B.A.). Some courses, such as languages or medicine, may be one or two years longer. Then the students may continue to take the Master's Degree and then the Doctor's Degree. Research is a very important feature of university life.

The universities have a big deal of societies and clubs enough for every interest one could imagine. Sport is a part of students' life at Oxbridge. The most popular sports are rowing and punting.

Conversation in a hotel

Dialog

A: Good morning. Midland Hotel.

B: Good morning. This is Jane Stevens from Dixia. I’m trying to arrange accommodation for a number of visiting businessmen from abroad and I’d like to know a little about the facilities that your hotel has to offer.

A: Well, the Midland is a 3-star hotel and we are situated five minutes from center of the town.

B: Uh-huh. And are you on the main road?

A: No, we’re on side street, and all the rooms are very quiet.

B: And what about a restaurant?

A: Well, we find that most of our clients prefer to eat out, and as there are plenty of restaurants in the vicinity, we have only a small restaurant – but we do serve hot food in the evening.

B: I see.

A: Of course we do have a bar – which has a very intimate atmosphere.

B: And what about entertainment at the hotel? Do you put on any dances?

A: No, I’m afraid we don’t.

B: And just a couple of final questions. Do you have either a swimming pool or a sauna?

A: No, not in the hotel, but there’s a pool with a sauna just round the corner.

B: Well, thanks very much for the information. Bye.

Dialog

A: Kings Hotel.

• B: Good afternoon. My name is Jane Stevens from Daxia. I’m just arranging accommodation for a number of foreign businessmen who are coming here next month. I wonder if you could tell me what facilities your hotel has to offer.

• A: Yes, certainly. Well, as you probably know, we are not in town. In fact it’s eight miles from the hotel to town. The hotel is set in its own grounds and the surrounding countryside is very beautiful and very peaceful. So your guests would certainly be assured of a quiet and restful stay

• B: And how about a restaurant?

• A: Yes, we have a large restaurant which caters both for residents and non-residents. It tends to be quite full around this time of year, but residents, of course, get priority.

• B: Uh-huh.

• A: We also have two bars – one of which is exclusively for residents.

• B: How about evening entertainment? Any dances?

• A: No, I’m afraid we don’t hold them any more. We used to, but now people prefer to go into town for a night out.

• B: I see. And what about a swimming pool or a sauna?

• A: Yes, we’ve recently had a sauna installed and it is extremely popular with our guests.

• B: And a swimming pool?

• A: No, not yet, unfortunately.

• B: Well, thanks very much for the information. Bye.

• A: Bye.

Dialog

A: Morning. General Hotel.

• B: Good morning. This is Jane Stevens from Daxia. I’d like to find out a little about the facilities offered by your hotel.

• A: One moment, please. I’ll just put you onto booking inquiries.

• B: Booking inquiries.

• A: Good morning. My name is Jane Stevens from Daxia. Could you tell me a little about the facilities offered by your hotel?

• B: Yes, certainly. The General is right in the middle of the town, next to the railway station, and is very convenient for people arriving or leaving by train.

• B: Does that mean that the hotel is quite noisy?

• A: Well, I wouldn’t say that we are exactly a country hotel. Yes, I suppose it is quite noisy.

• B: How about restaurant facilities?

• A: No, I’m afraid we haven’t got a restaurant here. Of course there are plenty in the vicinity. All we have is a snack-bar which serves light refreshments.

• B: Do you have a bar?

• A: Yes, we do.

• B: And what about evening entertainment?

• A: Well, we have a dance in the bar every Saturday evening. And that’s open to both residents and non-residents.
