1. Read the text below and translate it:

Let me introduce myself. My name is Кate.From the very beginning I should say that it’s not an easy thing to speak about yourself as it’s hard to have a look at yourself from aside, but at the same time who knows you better than you yourself do? So to begin with I should say that I am a girl of seventeen with dark hair and blue eyes. I am fairly tall and slim. I am short-sighted and I have to wear glasses most of the time.

I was born on the 3d of May 1994 in Volgograd where I live now together with my parents and my younger sister. My early years were typical of a child living in a city.

At the age of 7 I went to school. I studied at the same school for 11 years. In senior classes my favorite subjects were Russian literature, English, Biology, Art and Music. And I think I was rather good at those subjects. Besides learning school subjects I attended a sports club and did a bit of photography. I was also a member of the school literary club and wrote stories for our school newspaper.

Some months ago I passed my final exams at school. My marks were excellent in all the subjects and I got a golden medal. We had a wonderful farewell party at the end of June and I said good-bye to my teachers and classmates. I faced a new life without school with a mixed feeling of sadness and joy. School had meant a lot to me as it was not just learning and studying. I had made good friends there and met many interesting people.

I had asked myself a lot of times what I wanted to do when I left school. A few years ago it was difficult for me to give a definite answer. As the years passed I changed my mind several times. It was only in my last year at school that I finally made up my mind as to what profession I would most like to have in future. I realized that my strongest desire was to specialize in literature. That is why I have passed entrance exams lately. Now I am a first-year full-time student of the Volgograd State Social Pedagogical University (VSSPU for short).

Now a few words about my character and interests. My friends say that I’m sociable, helpful and cheerful. But my parents and my teachers sometimes say that I am not hardworking enough and that sometimes I am stubborn and hard to deal with, but I don’t think I am.

My favorite occupation is playing the guitar, reading and going to the theatre. I am fond of sport as well.

ASTUDENT’S WORKING DAY

I am a student. My name is Ann. My dream has come true. A new life begins. I guess it is not easy to study at the University. Every day I have much work to do. I remember that the lost time is never gained so I don’t waste time.

My week-days don’t differ much one from another. My working day begins early. English people say: «Early to bed and early to rise makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise». I am not an early riser, but I have to get up at 7 a.m. It is well known that good health is better than wealth so I try to do my morning exercises. It doesn’t take me much time. Then I wash, make my bed, have a light breakfast and get dressed.Sometimes I put on a light make-up. At a quarter past 8 a.m. I leave the hostel for the University. I go to the University on foot as it is not far from the hostel where I live. It takes me little time to get there. A lot of our groupmates live at home. They go to the University by bus or trolley bus. I always come to the University in time. I am never late.

Our classes usually begin at 8.00 a.m. Between classes we have short breaks and one long break for dinner.

As a rule we have practical classes, lectures and seminars in numerous theoretical and special subjects. Like most of our students I attend all the lectures as they are delivered by qualified professors and teachers, and are very interesting and important. We work much in class, at our laboratories and library to get deep knowledge.

As the students want to become not ordinary but good specialists they must study not only their text-books but read special literature in Russian and foreign languages. So English, German and French are taught at the University. To know some foreign language is necessary for every person because its knowledge also helps to learn more about culture, science, life and other events abroad.

There is a Students’ Scientific Society at our University. The students may join it and work on the subjects they care for. They carry out research work and then make reports at the conferences.

My classes are over at 3.40 p.m. Right after classes I go straight to the hostel. Sometimes I go to the library to take some books or articles necessary for my studies.

On my return I have a short rest, then I do my homework. It takes me not less than 3 hours. In the evening I have supper, read books, listen to music, watch TV or surf the Net. If I have time I go to the cinema or theatre.

On my week-days I usually go to bed at about midnight. Generally, now you know about my working day enough.

Forty-three-year-old Brian Blakey from Birmingham is sitting on his sofa and telling me about his perfect day.

When I wake up I don’t get up immediately. I turn on the television and watch the children’s programs and old movies until about half-past ten.

Then I get up, go downstairs and switch on the telly. For lunch, I have biscuits and a glass of milk, and I watch the news. In the afternoon, I often watch another old film – they’re showing some good ones at the moment.

In the evenings, I often watch soap operas or sport and the news again.

I like the main news at six o’clock. At nine thirty, if there is a good play on BBC2, I switch over and watch it. Then at night I watch more films and I usually switch off the telly at about two o’clock. I never watch the TV all night.

I watch TV for sixteen or seventeen hours a day. I also do some exercise every day. I take Tina, the dog, for a walk every afternoon. I don’t go far, of course. I walk to the wall outside my house. I always take my portable telly and I sit on the wall while the dog walks round in a circle.

Of course, I couldn’t live this lifestyle without a good wife. She’s not here now because she’s working, but she always makes my meals. We haven’t got much money, you know, but we’re happy. Sit down, watch the telly – you’ve got the world at your feet. And in your hand. Great!

MY BOSOM FRIEND

 

I have got a lot of friends. Most of them are my former schoolmates. But my bosom friend is Helen. She is 16. Helen isn't very tall, but she is pretty in her own way.

She has red curly hair and a turn-up nose. Helen wears spectacles and when spring comes there are plenty of freckles on her cheeks, forehead and nose. But all that doesn't make her plain or ugly. I like Helen because she is well-bred, jolly and kind.

She does well at school though she has got an unbreakable rule: never to study at night no matter how many written reviews are coming in the morning. She is also fond of reading plain books, and Lena sometimes thinks that one book isn't enough to read, she has two or three books going at once. My friend has got a lot of books at home, and she buys them wherever she goes.

She says that the books are of great help any time and they always must be at her hand. Her idea is that it's much easier to have a library of her own comprising lots of books than to try keeping everything in her head. Helen goes in for sports and she is a member of our school basketball team. She is terribly quick and strong.

It's a pleasure to watch her playing basketball: while others are hopping about in the air she always gets under their feet and grabs the ball. I don't like people who are bored at everything and who never make the slightest effort to be pleasant. That's why my friend is Helen, the most amusing person in the world. She thinks everything is funny – even flunking an exam.

Helen is a sunny soul by nature and always takes the slightest excuse to be amused. My friend has got a great imagination and her own style. Usually she writes nice compositions and once even won short-story contest that our school wallpaper holds every year.

Helen and I are good friends. We help each other a lot and try not to quarrel. But when sometimes it comes to quarrelling we try to make it up at once.
