Fine art or the fine arts describes an art form developed primarily for aesthetics and / or concept rather than practical application. Art is often a synonym for fine art, as employed in the term ‘art gallery.’ The word ‘fine’ does not so much denote the quality of the artwork in question, but the purity of the discipline.

Historically, the fine arts were limited to painting, sculpture, architecture and engraving. Today, the fine arts commonly include visual and performing art forms, such as painting, sculpture, installation, calligraphy, music, dance, theatre, architecture, photography and printmaking. However, in some institutes of learning or in museums fine art is often associated with the visual art forms.

The visual arts are art forms including ceramics, drawing, painting, sculpture, architecture, printmaking, modern visual arts (photography, video, and filmmaking), design and crafts. To visual arts may also belong the applied arts such as industrial design, graphic design, fashion design, interior design and decorative art.

Drawing is a means of making an image, using any of a wide variety of tools and techniques. It generally involves making marks on a surface by applying pressure from a tool, or moving a tool across a surface using dry media such as graphite pencils, pen and ink, inked brushes, wax color pencils, crayons, charcoals, pastels, and markers.

Painting is the practice of applying paint, pigment, color or other medium to a surface (support base). It is done with a brush but other objects may be used. Paintings may have for their support such surfaces as walls, paper, canvas, wood, glass, lacquer, clay or concrete. Paintings may be decorated with gold leaf, and some modern paintings incorporate other materials including sand, clay, and scraps of paper. Painting is also used to express spiritual motifs and ideas.

Printmaking is creating for artistic purposes an image on a matrix which is then transferred to a two-dimensional (flat) surface by means of ink (or another form of pigmentation). Normally the surface upon which the print is printed is paper, but there are exceptions, from cloth and vellum to modern materials.

Sculpture is three-dimensional artwork created by shaping or combining hard materials, typically stone such as marble, metal, glass, or wood, or plastic materials such as clay, textiles, polymers and softer metals. It is described as one of the plastic arts because it can involve the use of materials that can be molded or modulated.

Architecture is the art and science of designing and erecting buildings and other physical structures. Architectural works are often perceived as cultural and political symbols and as works of art. Historical civilizations are often identified with their surviving architectural achievements.

Dance is an art form that generally refers to movement of the body, usually rhythmic and to music used as a form of expression, social interaction or presented in a spiritual or performance setting. Dance is also used to describe methods of non-verbal communication between humans or animals (bee dance), motion in inanimate objects (the leaves danced in the wind), and certain musical genres.

Theater is a branch of the performing arts. It focuses almost on live performers creating a self contained drama. Theatre had existed since the dawn of man, as a result of the human tendency for storytelling. The word derives from the Ancient Greek with the meaning of ‘the seeing place’.

Photography is the process of making pictures by means of the action of light. The process is done through mechanical, chemical or digital devices known as cameras.

Filmmaking is the process of making a motion-picture, from an initial conception and research, through scriptwriting, shooting and recording, animation or other special effects, editing, sound and music work and finally distribution to an audience.

Computer art is any art in which computers played a role in production or display of the artwork. Such art can be an image, sound, animation, video, CD-ROM, DVD, video game, website, algorithm, performance or gallery installation.

Street art, being one of the movements of contemporary art, is any art developed in public spaces ‘in the streets’. The term can include traditional graffiti artwork, stencil graffiti, sticker art, street poster art, video projection, art intervention, guerrilla art, flash mobbing and street installations. Other forms of modern art may include tattoo, piercing, scarification and other.
