Participation is sport at all levels and by all segments of society has increased within the last decade and now is at an all-time high. The amount of money spent on sport services and goods, the gross national sport product (GNSP), was $63.1 billion in 1988. It is forecasted that the GNSP will be $121.1 billion in the year of 2000. As sport participation and the sport industry continue to grow, career opportunities in the various areas of sport management will expand.

The media - television, newspapers, magazines, books, movies - have come to play an increasingly important role in the realm of sports. Sports coverage by the various media continues to grow and has become big business. Monies paid by television for broadcasting rights to certain sports provide a good example of the magnitude of media involvement in sports. For example, CBS paid $1.06 billion for the right to televise major league baseball for 4 years (1990-1994), $1 billion to bring the NCAA men's basketball tournament to the viewing public for 7 seasons (contract extends through 1998), and $300 million for the 1994 Winter Olympic Games in Lillehammer, Norway. As media coverage continues to grow, so will opportunities for qualified professionals seeking a career in this area.

Professional sport opportunities are increased for athletes, including possible careers in performance, professional athletics, and officiating. Performance and related opportunities are also available for talented individuals in the allied field of dance.
