Theme: Sport [1, p 32]

Task1. Questions for discussion:

1. Do you enjoy or watching any sports? Why or not why?

Which sports are popular in your country, either to play or to watch?

In your opinion, why are they popular?

Task2. In small groups discuss these questions. Try to use some of the phrases from the Useful language box. Encourage each other to develop your answers, using expressions like the ones opposite.

· How important is it to try to win when you’re playing a sport?

(playing for pleasure, getting exercise, developing teamwork)

· Do sports like football need expensive stadiums or equipment – isn’t it enough to have a group of people, a peace of land and a ball?

(professional players, amateurs, spectators, developing skills)

· Why have some sports become fashionable, and is this a good thing?

(television, newspapers, celebrity sportspeople)

· Should sports in which people can get hurt be banned?

(everyday risks, protective clothing, first aid)

Theme: Family and personality

Task 1. Work in pairs.

STUDENT A

Write down five sentences which describe the kind of person you are attracted to. Example:

I am attracted to a man with a sense of humor. OR I like women with curly hair.

STUDENT В

Write down five sentences which describe the kind of person you are not attracted to. Example:

I can't stand mean people.

Try to guess what qualities your partner likes/ dislikes. Then explain why you wrote what you did.

Task 2. Take it in turns to imagine you are someone else in the class. The others must ask Yes/No questions to guess who you are. Example:

STUDENT A: Have you got dark hair?

YOU: No, I haven't.

STUDENT B: Are you middle-aged?

YOU: Yes, I am.

STUDENT C: Are you Carlos?

YOU: No, I'm not.

If the other students make a wrong guess, you win. They can only ask ten questions.

Task 3. Answer the following questions about yourself.

Theme: Money matters.

Task1. Say whether you think the following future situations are possible or imaginary. Then say what you will do or what you would do in each situation.

Examples:

If my boyfriend phones me this evening, I'll tell him I've got a headache.

You are poor. (Imaginary)

If I were poor, I'd live in a cheaper house.

Task 3. Read the comments made by three teenagers about their attitudes to stealing.

a) Where possible, decide which of their comments you agree or disagree with and write down any comments of your own.

b) Do you sympathize with any of the young people? Is stealing more acceptable if you're poor? Discuss your views in groups.

c) Read what the young people said again and find two colloquial expressions which mean steal.
