Admissions criteria at American colleges

A decisive role in the admission to colleges and universities play standardized examinations. SAT. ACT. (про них мы знаем из билета 7) + academic performance of applicants at school. But there are still many other factors which are taken into consideration by the admissions comettee (officers) of a college.

First of all – extracuriculum activities are taken into account. Admissions officers like when students occupy leadership roles and show years of commitement – so that it is clear that they do not do activities just to put them on their applications. But at the same time these activities must not take all their time, as studying is always a priority.

An essay must be enclosed to the applicant's letter to the admissiions comettee – and it must show curiosity and self-awareness. It is a thing that lets the officers look inside the applicant's soul, that is why it is to be composed accurately, with a sense of humour, but not too polished. An important moment: if an applicant have suffered any dip in academic performance, he/she needs to count for it, either in essay or in a counselor's letter.

Schools are also taken with good students from poor families with little education or money.

The recommendation letter from the teacher also is very important. The best ones describe a student's accomplishements with specific and knowing details. So a student should ask to write the letter someone who really knows him and his work. And then, an important factor – colleges want students who want them.
