Ex. 1.40 Read the text about Jim’s Aunt Mally and explain the words in bold.

Of all my relatives, I like my Aunt Mally the best. She is my mother’s sister. She is married, and lives with her husband John in a small village near Sydney. She’s in her late forties, but she’s quite young for her age. She has a fair complexion, straight dark hair and hazel eyes. She has a kind face, which lights up in a smile. Her face is a little wrinkled now, but I think she is still rather attractive.

She is rather responsive. Mally is the sort of people you can always go to if you have a problem. She is more prudent and reserved* than my mother who is very sincere *, but less orderly and lenient than she is.

Aunt Mally likes reading and gardening and she still goes for long walks over the hills. She is a very active person. She is creative *, as she always makes something, or mends something, or does something to entertain herself. She’s extremely generous *, but very intolerant with people who don’t agree with her! I hope I will be as contented as she is when I am her age.

* reserved [ri´zə: vd] * creative [kri´eitiv]

* sincere [sin´siə] * generous [´d enərəs]
