ABOUT

Gazprom-Media Holding is one of the largest media holdings in Russia and Europe. The company was founded on January 21, 1998. This is public joint stock holding company with headquarters located in Moscow, Russia. It’s parent currently is Gazprombank. Key people: Nikolay Senkevich (CEO) Alexander Dybal (Board Chairman).

Gazprom-Media Holding comprises television, radio, printing press, cinema production, advertising, movie theaters and internet assets. It claims as the main objective of its activities accumulation and development of media assets. Regarding assets its main principle is to supervise business not content. Every media project must keep high quality and occupy its own niche. That is why all the Gazprom-Media Holding projects (informative, analytical or entertaining) are in great demand and popular practically with the entire population in this country. [1]

Gazprom-Media Holding includes:

OWNERSHIP, STATE INFLUENCE

In 2005 Gazprom-Media Holding was sold to Gazprombank for 37,22 billions RUR. Currently “OAO Gazprom” owns 41,73 % shares of the bank[3]. The state owns 50% plus 1 share of Gazprom, when 46,92 % of shares belong to “NPF Gazfond”.[4]

Gazfond is a bubsidiary of the leading national companies (OAO Gazprom, Gazprombank, OOO Gazprom dobicha Urengoi, Gazprom dobicha Yamburg, Gazprom transgaz Saratov)[5]. Most part of Gazfond shares is owned by “Lider”, a subsidiary of “Sogaz”, controlled by “Rossiya” bank, which is considered to be under a high influence of V. Putin.[6]

Thus, we can assume, the government owns approximately 75% (51%+49%*0,51) of Gazprom-Media Holding shares trough public authorities.

INTERNATIONALIZATION

According to the information available, Gazprom-Media Holding was capable of strategic actions in Russia, on a huge scale. Among these:

1. Joint venture with “National sputnik company” in 2009[7]

2. The company sold 100% of NEXT FM shares to its CEO Julia Yakovleva in 2011.[8]

3. Acquisition of 74,99 % shares of Comedy Club Production Holding Ltd. for $350 mln, thus getting control over Comedy Club Group content.[9]

However, there is no information available, stating that Gazprom-Media Holding went international.

PERVIY KANAL

ABOUT

Today Perviy Kanal is the first television channel to broadcast in the Soviet Union. The channel was renamed Ostankino Channel 1 in 1991, after the Soviet Union broke up and the Russian SFSR became the Russian Federation. Its headquarters are in the Technical Center "Ostankino" near the Ostankino Tower, Moscow. The channel covers the territory with 98,8% population of RF.[10] First among the Russia's country-wide channels, Channel One has implemented 16:9 broadcast format on January 4, 2011 to June 1, 2011 and October 10, 2011 on satellite and digital cable broadcasting, and 14:9 on analogue broadcasting.[11]
