A rich but ignorant Englishman once went to the famous painter Turner and ordered a painting. When it was finished he refused to pay the price that the painter demanded. "What," he said, "all that money for a square yard of canvas and a little paint!" "Oh," replied Turner, "if it's just paint and canvas that you want, here's a half-used tube, and over in the corner you will find some canvas. I won't charge you much for them."

Michelangelo

The famous sculptor Michelangelo lived in Florence. He was well known completed the beautiful statue, which he called David. The day the statue was ready a large crowd of people gathered in the square. The Governor of Florence came too. He stood for a long time looking at the statue.

Then he said that he didn't like it, as David's nose was too long. Michelangelo made up his mind to please the governor and not to spoil the statue. He went up to the statue with a handful of marble dust. He pretended to be changing the shape of the nose and at the same time dropped some of the marble dust, which he had taken with him. The governor thought that this was marble dust from the nose of the statue. When Michelangelo had finished, the governor said: "That's excellent! Now you have given more life to the face," and the people, who understood what Michelangelo had done, shouted with joy. This statue is one of Michelangelo’s best works.

MURILLO

Ex.1. Read the story attentively and quickly to find out who taught Sebastian

To paint.

A Slave

Murillo was a great painter in Spain. He painted beautiful pictures and he had many students. Once he came to his studio and found a very beautiful picture there. He asked his students who had painted that picture but nobody answered. Then he asked his slave Sebastian if he had seen somebody in the studio the night before. The slave did not answer. When the night came and everybody went away Sebastian began to paint. He did not think of the time. Suddenly he heard a noise behind him. When he turned round he saw Murillo and his students watch him quietly.

“Sebastian,” cried Murillo, “You are a very good painter. How did you learn to paint?”

“You gave lessons to your students, and I heard them”, answered the slave. Murillo understood that the slave was a very gifted painter, so he gave him freedom and began to work with his “slave” who was not a slave any longer.
