People who teach at British universities are divided into lecturers, senior lecturers, readers, and professors. Lecturers have the lowest teaching rank while readers have the rank just below professors. A professor in Britain is a university teacher of the highest rank, and is usually in charge of a university department. People who teach at US colleges or universities are divided into instructors, assistant professors, associate professors, and full professors. Instructors in the US correspond to lecturers in Britain as well as assistant professors to senior lecturers. An associate professor is a professor at an American university whose job is above the level of an assistant professor and below the level of a full professor. Associate professors usually have a master's degree and work towards a doctor of philosophy. A full professor in the US is a college or university teacher of the highest academic rank, usually in a specific field. Full professors have tenure, that is, have the right to keep the job as long as they want it. Academic tenure is granted to teachers on the fulfillment of specified requirements, including such criteria as the quality of teaching and "publish or perish". "Publish or perish" is a phrase used to express the idea that it is important for teachers who work at colleges or universities to publish books about their research, and that if they fail to do so it will have a bad effect on their career. The idea is sometimes criticized because teachers are seen to be spending more time on their writing than on their teaching.
